Black Panel Press has released another fantastic graphic novel - this one following Vincent Van Gogh during the last 3 months of his life. It’s a beautiful and reflective look at arguably the most creative period of his career. Odone’s illustrations, particularly when describing Vincent’s depression, are guaranteed to strike an emotional chord with readers. He’s also included actual letters written by Vincent and his family, which makes the story all the more personal. I loved it, and would recommend the book to all admirers of his work.  

Solutions and Other Problems is compelling, and shows what Allie was going through during the time she had disappeared off the internet. It sounds like it was an awful period in her life, but she manages to wrap it all up in humour and her special brand of drawing. Please take a gander at both books - you won’t regret it. 

Magic Lessons is the third book set in the world of Practical Magic - and to be honest, I think it’s my favourite. 

This time we travel back to the 17th century and learn about the origins of the Owens family line and their love curse.  But this book is so much more than that - it’s also an excellent bit of historical fiction. And a reader could easily pick it up without knowing anything about the previous books. 

The story is an adventure that spans oceans, and moves at a steady clip. The magical elements are integrated in such a natural and organic way that it feels like it was an actual part of history. It definitely sparked my interest in learning more about the time period - especially the parts about the Portuguese pirates!

I’ve heard that another book is coming in this series - this time jumping forward to the modern day Owens women. I can’t wait to read it.

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. And I wish this book had been around when I was a teen.
