Strong second volume that picks up exactly where the first one ended. It's all still so mysterious, but we learned a bit more, and it's all definitely frightening! This poor town. These poor kids. At this point, the best thing to do is run. Run far, far away and never look back.

Soft DNFing. Fantastic writing but the multi-page paragraphs are too much for my brain right now.
This was such an imaginative and very age relevant book! I think kids will really get a kick out of it. There's really interesting world building, excellent characters, and so many twists and turns. If you have a middle grader who loves fantasy horror, I recommend checking this one out!

This installment seems to be building to something spectacular, but the pacing felt quite a bit off versus the first book. Once you get past that though, the characters are all coming into their own.
I think I'm most partial to Gemma's storyline, but that doesn't surprise me. It doesn't feel like any stakes are quite high enough for what all happened in book 1. I'm still interested in where this all leads, but that interest is slightly dampened at this point.

Still, I'm so interested in what happens next because I believe that this is going to be a really extraordinary story. I can't wait to see what happens next for the space nuns, their ship, and everything that's happened so far. There's so many possibilities on where this story is going to go next!

In the first volume, we see the origin stories for the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, and Alice, and they are all so very twisted. I really can't pick which I preferred because I just really dug each of them for different reasons.
I didn't love how femme bodies were portrayed here. That was a bit skeezy but if you can look past that and like really dark comics (like I Hate Fairyland and Monstress), definitely check this out!
