If you've ever been the child who is overlooked because you aren't a boy. Put down because of your looks, weight, or relationship status. Care about a worthy cause that most people don't care about?  Then this is for you. I found this book relatable in so many aspects. I dont know much about Chinese culture but I do enjoy lunar new year in relation to the east Asian diaspora in connection to food. I found the behavior of lilies family very relatable. Unfortunately foreign families have the encanto effect. Where the villian should apologize and pay but people take the half apology and let it go because of family responsibility in relation to culture. To also have your own family call you fat ugly needing to marry and have kids because you're old wow such a common thing. Maybe a trigger warnings would be helpful for some. I really enjoyed the story not being overly romantic but just enough. I dont know much about brands being that i grew up poor and prefer thrifting ross tjmaxx marshalls Macy's etc even my favorite luxury brand kate spade I get from the outlet or thrift. I could see this played out in a short film or indie reminds me of saving face movie by Alice we in the ridiculousness of the characters. Good job grace.

For bookclub did not feel compelled to finish wanted to read other books enjoyed the half I read found it sad and familiar. Confused with so many characters. May return in the future. Audio might be better for me with an intellectual read.

Was slow for me to get into at first. I think it was a lot of depressing content that I needed breaks. However towards the middle and end I laughed and yelled at characters and their actions reading. This really distracted me in the best way possible and I truly can't wait to see what becomes of the beloved characters in book 3.

Clear trigger warnings for this entire book about everything you could imagine. Reader discretion is advised.

_Overall rating of 4.8/5
Received a free copy from LibraryThings to read and review. 100% opinions are my own with no influence or favoritism to the author. My interview with the author on my podcast does not cloud my judgment or change my rating. I genuinely enjoy this book and the challenges I faced while reading it. My favorite characters are Roy & Finn...the horses. All the humans in this book have little to no redeeming qualities. Which is not necessary and intentional. The meme of Jamie Lee Curtis on her Halloween film tour repeatedly saying "It is a story about trauma" is this book. All the characters in some way or another are acting out due to their pain. Using alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, sex, or murder to relieve their woes. I do not think one of the character's stories is done and that's just a feeling I have because water has memory and is healing is all I am going to say. I found that in my own life, I have faced complicated feelings that have made me want to hurt someone, myself, or be wicked. It can be hard to be open when you have not necessarily been seen. A common theme is feelings and the actions that follow. I resonate and being seen is what I describe it as. I felt I always felt too much like charlotte and had bad experiences with people who hurt me. Taking advice from others who are put on a pedestal led to my regret. I would read book two to know what more bad luck Charlotte could get herself into. JD is the only character who is gonna hurt the most and does not deserve it. Mrs. Marga will probably also be important. The price and length of the book may be difficult for some but luckily there is an ebook and hopefully soon an audiobook.
_Writing style 5/5 each character has a distinctive voice and I could hear it-envision it in my head.
_4.7/5 for the plot that kept me on edge. Could not guess all the twists and turns. Charlotte & Mac truly have the worst luck in the world. Most of the characters unfortunately do. Not a happy book or happy ending to this first one in the series.
_Notes on Goodreads while reading:
This is not a novel but a tome. Like seriously why are there so many pages!? so far it's good though on chapter 5."
"Charlotte is a fool who will probably fall for mac and will die."
A common theme is jealousy.
When they had the chance to have a bouncy fun time"
"Humans are dumb. All the human characters annoy me at this point. Still a good story."
"Jealousy and miscommunication"

I am a black cis queer woman of jamaican descent. I am a nurse who cares for people with autism. I have qualms with the descriptions used. I dont know if this was the intention or not but to repeatedly suggest higher functioning disabled people can live a full life feels abolish. The religious spirit aspect came off as magical autistic stereotype. I truly felt like the authors intention was not this but only expressing her experience the character is based on a family member from what I remember her telling me but even quote on quote high functioning autistic people vary on a spectrum. The points of forcing physical intimacy and situations don't just go away because of love or wanting them to. The character struggled but realistically always will even with people she trusts or are familiar to her. I feel really strange after reading this book.

The pros had everything to do with the plot not including what I mentioned above like sibling love, navigating dating and relationships, independence, abandonment even forgiving and reconnecting, loss of parents, etc that are challenging for anyone.

The beginning of the story was very slow for me. With the introduction to the new world but I love the map and the art visuals I recieved. I wanted more juana and lu wlw time like santi kissed everyone so I wanted the same for the girls. I appreciate the diversity in sexuality and love not being weird or wrong in this world of pirates. I do wish some parts were expounded on and cut out that was not as interesting.

There are many stories here that are relatable funny and heartbreaking. This book reminds of of " the sex lives of African women" i am first generation Jamaican not nigerian in anyway but I feel connected to these fictional people because I feel like there are many nonfictional truths to it.

Mia is the most annoying character i have ever read and I feel like the author did that intentionally. Al and kal are my favorites. Viper is scum. So much drama triggers and corruption. Mix of magical elements.
