The plot moves slower than the growth of a redwood tree. But it gets points for originality, I guess.
The relationships and science in this book are intriguing, but not enough to balance out the floundering climax. It was like eating at a mediocre restaurant because you’ve heard their chocolate cake is incredible, but then getting to the end of the meal and they’ve run out of chocolate cake, and they offer carrot cake instead, which is still cake, sure, but it’s not what you wanted.
The research that went into this book is extraordinary! This was my first Titanic story not directed by James Cameron and I loved the cast of characters. But I was never spooked by the supernatural elements or saddened by the disaster because the pacing didn’t quite work for me. I’d still recommend this to anyone who likes historical fiction or spooky stories!
