Kavenna has created the best technological satire of our time. First it makes you laugh because it’s too real, and then the laughter stops and turns to nervous nail biting. 5/5
My only complaint: it’s too short! I can’t wait to see how she comes to the monastery and how she and her father reckon with their trauma and the changing world.
Max Brooks, you wild son of a gun, you did it again!
If you think of Bigfoot as a hairy home invader who will absolutely eat you for a midnight snack, this is the book for you!
If you think of Bigfoot as Chewbacca with an American accent, BE PREPARED FOR DISAPPOINTMENT.
No one can take unsettling folk monsters and turn them into something Very Real and Soul-Shaking Horrifying like Brooks. 10/10, will not be hiking any time soon.

I RATE THIS BOOK ALL THE STARS IN THE SKY
I have a low horror threshold but I LOVE me some resoundingly unsettling vibes. Especially when elements of nature become unexplainably warped (looking at you, “Annihilation” and “Amatka”, you super weird babies!!). I tore through this in two hours, mostly because I was reading at night and was too afraid to stop.
Silvia Moreno-Garcia takes her time unspooling the deepest, darkest, buck-wild craziness with the most delicious descriptions of a crumbling mansion and a family looooooooong past its prime. The pacing is wonderful, the heroine is a badass, I can‘t recommend this enough!!!

Deep, luscious novella that made me believe in magic again. 10 forest cats out of 10.
Steampunk Cairo with djinn and ghosts?? HIT ME UP. 20 tram cars out of 20, wish this was a series.
Oh shoot! A zombie invasion brought on by a lack of healthcare?? Timely as f***. 10 futuristic malls out of 10.
