A little dry in places and aimed at business and economist readers, but threaded with some fascinating tidbits on culture and history.
How much does memory define us?
Ishiguro manages to canvas so many doubts and questions of the human condition all with a handful of characters and a hazy medieval King Arthur setting. It is a slow but deep read, and beware that you fear the correct dragon.

There are some impressive bones here. Duncan creates a fascinating world reminiscent of warring Slavic times with a magic system thrown in for funsies.
However, two things kept me from enjoying this book:
1. I had difficulty believing the primary romance. (Ex: Oh, he seems monstrous and evil but handsome.)
2. Occasionally the characters or magic system lacked depth. (Ex: Rashid and Parijahan have so much promise, but are largely glossed over as "support". I really hope they get fleshed out in later books.)

Not quite what I expected when I picked it up - this was more of a personal essay on what tumbles through the mind and what is envisioned while reading than heavy research into the topic.
If you are looking for research into what is visualized while someone is listening to an audio-book or turning pages this misses the mark. If you are looking for the kind of discussion you would get on "What do you see when you read?" over drinks then this book is what you're looking for.
I did greatly enjoy the book, and it was a visual feast with some philosophical turns to it. Highly recommend if you enjoy personal essays or books about books!
