Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the opportunity to review this title.
This review is based on the 68% I did read. This was not the book for me at all. The persistence of harmful language and over focus on masogenistic sexual scenes were just over the top and were redundant as there was no point to them. I read from every genre but love horror, but this was just gratuitous with no actual plot either. The first 30% I thought I was reading a war story... only to realise it was back story/flash backs that went on for way too long. If you don't like reading about someone being turned on by a student, or have to read language that hit all the unacceptable areas (race, intellectual disability, sexism, ageism, fat phobia to name but a few), this one isn't for you. However, if you like disjointed reads that have a focus on sex in a very boundary challenging way then this might be for you. I'm sorry I couldn't get on board with this one and I hope it finds it's audience... I'm just not that audience.

I enjoyed it and I really love the world, Carrot, and the humour. However, I feel like my lack of historical knowledge meant I missed the meaning of some things. I also didn't much enjoy the masogeny but I will know to expect it going forward and also, haven't worked out if it's on purpose as part of the world or the actual thoughts of the author. I think if he hadn't dedicated the book to Neil Gaimen then I probably wouldn't be questioning this aspect as much.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for providing an ALC for me to read and review.

WARNING: DO NOT EAT SLIMY FOODS WHILE READING.... This is my first experience reading from this author and I am relatively new to reading horror. This is a highly politically and socially charged story and the audio is a full cast and well produced with sound effects and great voice actors. I found this a good solid read overall with a couple of slower parts of the story... which normally would be a downside, but in this case I felt like they were well placed slow parts allowing the reader to take in what is happening and letting the reader really get caught up in the why's and wherefore's of the story. I listened to this in one sitting and would recommend doing this on purpose... get set up for the evening all snuggly and cosy with a strong drink and be ready to be thoroughly creeped out with a few side orders of ick!
I appreciated that this politically and socially charged, apocalyptic story didn't rely on unnecessary use of slurs despite the conversations and experiences of the characters being so heavily entrenched in the prejudice of the social and political environment of the book. I also thought it showed how easy it is to miss the gradual change in people close to us and even the change in ourselves.
I would recommend this to readers that - have a strong stomach; enjoys horror that relies on social commentary that feels a little too reflective of current times; enjoys a satirical vibe; enjoys apocalyptic stories that feel like they could happen; and doesn't mind not having clear answers for everything.

This was a well produced audiobook and I enjoyed the voices used for this. I also really enjoyed the plot in this and there were some really fun side characters too. I liked that it was dual pov from both partners perspectives but it did start off a little frustrating as the female main character was depicted as being a serial killer due to her traumatic childhood (won't go into further detail as that would spoil) and the male main character was a stereotypical rich kid kicking back at the controlling parents by being a serial killer.... hmmm.. this aspect felt very much a "safe" choice and also leans into some unhelpful stereotypes that I would have preferred not have seen. However, as the storyline progresses and you learn more about each character it becomes less of an issue as they become more nuanced. Another aspect I found a little tricky to navigate initially was the lack of communication trope heavily leaned on to provide the plot to have little hidey holes. However, even this seemed to work itself out and become a non issue as the story picked up and the twists and turns took off. Some of the twists were actually great and although I thought I new how it would end.. I had no idea how they were going to get there so it was a really fun time. It also had some depth to the plot and the characters that I initially hadn't expected. This with the unique and interesting writing style makes me want. to read more from this author.
I think this book is ideal for readers who like having an idea of the ending but don't necessarily want to see how they are getting there. I also think that people that like a low key mystery element, main characters you want to slap whilst routing for them completely, and side characters that bring the comedy will thoroughly enjoy this.

Moderate: Sexual assault, Suicide
It was reading like a murder mystery... but without the murder... I just wasn't vibing with it.
Started off great... then used some tropes that annoy me. I carried on having a great time rolling my eyes and moaning.... and not like Shea did hehe.
