An easy 5 stars! I could recommend this to anyone! even those that don't usually read graphic novels or romance. There's so much in this coming of age series that tackles aspects such as age, eating disorders, identity, sexuality, gender, and so much more! the journeys you take with these characters fills you to the brim with love and joy!

This was a highly anticipated book in the end for me. After being persuaded by the bookseller to purchase this, I then saw a book tuber whose opinion I highly rate (Leandra the tbr zero... I am looking at you), find this a 5 star for them. I instantly knew I needed to read this.
I am so glad I did! I loved the disability and queer rep, and the relationships that develop throughout had my heart completely! I am so drawn to character driven novels, BUT, the world was also really well developed considering how short this book was! So impressed with this debut novel and cannot wait to read the next book in the series!!!! Massive props to Hannah Kaner!

I was so excited to listen to this novel. I was super intrigued by the locked room and the tongue in cheek nod to the popularity of supernatural elements in the UK in the 1920’s. Faith Martin (author) and John Hopkins (narrator) did not disappoint with this one! It was such  a charming novel with some genuinely funny and sweet moments. It is my first experience with Faith Martin and I am now looking forward to reading more from this author. The plot was well thought out and I did not figure out who the murderer was or even that the murderer was definitely human (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). The moment I realised who the murder was a moment I gasped out loud! Personally, as a reader I am a sucker for characters I can love with my whole heart… Arbie and Val had great interactions and they became real to me… This is my favourite element of this novel. A close second was the description of the environment. It felt very realistic even in the wilder moments it was very believable. Where I would say that it sits very much in the mystery genre there were a couple of scenes that edged into thriller territory which was very enjoyable too!
With reference to the narrator. I felt they did a fantastic job. They’re voice was very well placed for the atmosphere of this novel and although their attempt at female voices was not quite as convincing… it was not a problem. I was not pulled out of the world at all. I will look out for this narrator again as I really enjoy their narration.

This was a fun read. You cant go into it to take it seriously at all though. Finlay finds herself in situations that just would not go the way they go in this book. That's really the fun of it. There are some funny moments and I am looking forward to seeing what else she gets up to in the rest of the series.

The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle

Steve Hugh Westenra

DID NOT FINISH: 40%

So Tyler Kyle is a youtuber with his friend. They investigate cryptid sightings together and although Tyler knows that his friend is heterosexual, he has confusing feelings of romantic love towards him. After they drunkenly kiss one night Tyler decides to investigate a video he was sent, by his stalker,  revealing a link with his long lost mother. However, when he arrives on the island he is overwhelmed by the ominous feeling and odd occurrences that seem to be going on the island. Will Tyler find the answers he wants and will he figure out his own sexuality questions along the way?!

This review will only comment on the experience of reading it to 40%. This novel is written in the first person and is overtly stream of consciousness. Although this is not my favourite style of writing, I did love the amount of queer representation there was. There were references to Canadian folklore which was fun too. If you enjoy books that feel like a fever dream this is definitely for you. There is something about Tyler and the plot that makes you want to know what happens and find out what’s going on. And while I did not find it funny or particularly atmospheric, I can see how a lot of people would get that aspect. I also really wanted to know the outcome of Tyler telling his friend how he feels. However, all of this was not enough to keep me reading. While I could see the potential of the plot and the characters, I felt it would have benefitted from a couple more rounds of editing (Tyler read like he was a teenager instead of in his thirties); and potentially a sensitivity reader due to the nature of many of the themes. For example, references to gender, sexuality, race, religion, and ethnicity were all bandied about in a very jarring way that was not always called for, or appropriate. I wonder if this was intended to be social commentary, if this is the case I support it 100% and this is why I am still making the effort to review a book I did not finish. More editing I feel would work out the disjointed nature of the sentence structure and flow. As a reader, I want to be shown more and less of the telling what to visualise.

There is something about this. The plot was not particularly strong and neither was the character development. However, I probably still will read the next book.

Another great book by this author. I spent almost all of the book confused about where it was going and who could be trusted. I really liked the elements that were brought in to subvert the readers thoughts on what was going on. Joanne Harris is a very skilled writer.

I loved the concept of this book but found the writing style a bit clunky. However, the second half was better than the first and I did like the overall plot.
