The gods let us jump so that we could be free.
August shakes his head. “There are no gods in this world.” He reaches out to close her eyes. “Only kings and tyrants.”
Man, this book was good. It had the brutality of The Hunger Games on a backdrop of a Hong Kong-inspired fantasy. The concept was one I’ve never read before: where bodies are mere vessels and the only thing that matters is qi, a person's life force, soul, I guess? They call it jumping, where you can send your qi into another body if they’re within range and are weaker than you. Your eye colour seems to be the only thing that stays the same though. Anyway, it was a very interesting concept and I hope we hear more about it, and the other ways qi works, in the next books!
Calla Tuoleimi, princess of Er. She could do nothing on a throne, but she can do everything with a sword in her hand.
I really enjoyed Calla as a main character. I thought she was tough, ruthless (like…extremely ruthless), and motivated. She wanted to kill the king and nothing, not even love, would get in her way.
Anton. I liked Anton, for the most part. Even though we had his POV sometimes, I feel like I don’t know him enough yet. I want more backstory, more of Otta, what made him tick, that sort of thing.
“That she was a sociopath”—his fists have clenched—“and a lying, manipulative bitch of a half sister.”
Anton cannot contain his glower. A rush like no other floods Calla’s veins.
“He wouldn’t dare—”
“No, you’re right,” Calla cuts in, examining her nails. “Those aren’t his words at all. Those are mine.”
I’m definitely interested in seeing more of Otta, whose side is she going to help?
She knows she’s leaving marks on him, her nails digging deep, and by the intensity of his fingers on her hips, he will have left a canvas of damage too. Let it bruise. Let him mark her skin permanently as a memory of what divine agony is.
But I did like Calla and Anton together, it was very:
🗡back-and-forth
🗡enemies-to-lovers
🗡I-tried-to-kill-you-a-few-times-and-may-try-again
🗡Do-I-want-to-have-sex-with-you-or-kill-you-I-don’t-know.
“You’re beautiful.” Calla snorts behind her mask.
“You can’t see me.”
“Who says I have to?”
“Do you flirt with every person you’re trying to kill?”
“Only you, Fifty-Seven.”
I thought their relationship progressed naturally enough to not be insta-love, which is the bane of any romance's existence, and it flowed nicely.
But Anton does not tighten his grip on her throat. What should be a deathly squeeze becomes merely a caress, and he leans in to kiss her, more softly than any of the times previous.
“I know,” Calla replies, matching his volume. She closes her eyes, her hands tracing down his back, nails running along the muscle. There’s some feral feeling humming in her chest, and she has to resist the urge not to attack him when her hands sink low, feeling how hard he is. She’s going to lose her mind. His hand runs another caress at her jaw. She can hear the teasing in his voice.
“Is something the matter?”
“You are wicked,” she breathes. “Take your pants off and fuck me.”
August. Eh. I wasn’t a fan. He seems to think he could be a better king than Kasa, but his personality, the way he gets what he wants, makes me think he’d just grow power-hungry like any tyrant would.
There were 3 reveals/ahh moments I’ll talk about, but they have huge spoilers, so don’t click if you don’t want things ruined.
Anton lets out a long breath. “This is Calla Tuoleimi’s body,” he whispers, “but you’re not Calla, are you?”
I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!! It should have been obvious when she first mentioned that she had only jumped once in her life, but at that point, I’m pretty sure I was still a little confused about the process. She’s been the princess for so long that she technically is her now, but what a great surprise! Also explains her brutally murdering her “parents.”
2. Ledia’s betrayal.
Another thing that surprised me but really shouldn’t have since she wanted to run away when she was younger. August shouldn’t have been surprised, but considering he’s turning power-hungry, I can see how he would have missed a rebellion right under his nose.
3. Anton’s survival.
Yes. This entire thing. What is he gonna do now?? Are Calla and Anton going to go back to being enemies – like…she did kill him in the arena!! Is he going to jump back to his real body eventually and give August back his body? Is he going to stay ruler if he jumps to his real body, or will August?? I have so many questions!!!
No matter what, everything in Talin flows back to him. There is nothing that can compete with his wealth, but stay in line, and he might just break off a piece and offer it generously. A gift; a consolation prize.
This book is rife with politics, oppression, and poverty. The wealthy can do no harm and the poor are left to die in the streets, sometimes literally if they can’t afford the hospital bed. At the center of it all? A delusional King. One who believes he was chosen by the gods and is a blessing to the city.
Casual travel in and out of San-Er is, after all, forbidden. Once someone becomes a citizen of the twin cities by birth or by lottery, there they remain, unless they are granted a formal departure permit. King Kasa is too afraid of what might happen if people are allowed free travel.
AND THE FUDGING CLIFFHANGER HOW DARE YOU
“It will be remembered,” he goes on, like he doesn’t hear her. “And what fine daylight we have today to ensure its longevity in their memory.”
Some quotes:
Now, the games are a thrill that anyone can participate in, a solution to a kingdom simmering with complaints. Don’t worry if your babies drop dead because they have hollowed into starved husks, King Kasa declares. Don’t worry that your elderly must sleep in cages because there is no more apartment space, nor that the neon light from the strip club across the alleyway keeps you awake night after night. Put your name in the lottery, slaughter only eighty-seven of your fellow citizens, and be awarded with riches beyond your wildest dreams.
Maybe it would be better if San-Er simply killed its people faster. Instead, it lets them rot. The elderly with nowhere else to go live stacked atop one another like animals inside enclosures. The children breathe asbestos in their schools and store poison in their lungs. Sometimes the sick and injured intentionally wander the streets during the games, hoping to be invaded. The games make jumping legal for the players, after all—they must answer for it by providing some sort of care. Collateral casualties who are gravely injured must be taken to the hospital free of cost; collateral casualties whose bodies are destroyed must be paid handsomely, and if their qi is killed alongside it, then their family members get the money. Plenty throw themselves in front of players on purpose, making a sacrifice so that their loved ones can eat.
“Do not mistake my tolerance for weakness, August,” she says quietly. “Do not forget who you’re talking to. You’ve gotten used to ordering people around, I know. Day in and day out, they must heed what you say, because you are the crown prince, and they cannot offend such a man.” Her eyes flicker back to him. “But I am Calla Tuoleimi.” The lie no longer feels like a lie. “I am a princess who sacrificed my own throne for this kingdom. You do not order me around.”
Thank you to the author and Simon and Schuster Canada for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

A FUCKING CLIFFHANGER
WHYYYYYY
UGHHHHHH
I thought there was another page 😭
So, this was an ARC, review to come ONCE I GET OVER THAT ENDING
“Why begin, when it will end?”
I was creepy-smiling throughout this whole book. It was funny, sad, and spicy, everything I look for in a romcom!
“I think this is where I’ll die. I think I’ll just lie down and wait for death. He can use me to fertilize the flowers.”
This book is about Ama, a wedding planner who doesn’t believe in weddings, and Elliot, a florist who likes flowers more than people. Honestly, same, Elliot.😂
“And I almost hope there was someone after me, someone who broke him differently. Because I’m not worth three years of someone’s life.”
Ama is reasonably traumatized about weddings considering her mother has been married, what, 16 times!? I DIED reading that 😂😂 She was so closed off to love (and people) and her journey was great!
Elliot’s internal monologue is super funny, it was a highlight of the book for me!
“I wonder if she’ll look up The Language of Flowers and figure out I just told her, You are immature and I resent you. Go away.”
He was blunt, awkward, and sometimes (most times) rude, but underneath was a little gooey center of amazingness. He reluctantly took over his father’s flower shop after he died but learned that all they really needed were water, light, and attention.
Flowers are better than people.
“Yes, Dad, they are,” I say to the empty shop.
This part hit me so hard!😭😭
“There are exactly four of his flowers that are still kicking, ones that I brought to his funeral when I thought he’d maybe like more flowers than people there.”
Elliot was a really great character for me. I loved his personality, his sassiness, his love for flowers and architecture, and how he worked passionately and tirelessly. But his anxieties also spoke to me. Some were big and some were tiny ones that you’d never expect to be bothered by, and yet, you are.
“I posted a picture of a deconstructed floral arch ten minutes ago, and I’m already checking on Twitter to see if Instagram is broken. After five minutes, I finally get a set of likes. But because my self-worth is now intrinsically tied to this picture, I’m thinking of deleting it, then myself.”
Elliot’s clear romantic awkwardness is what completely won me over in the end. It was adorable and I love him. He was so rough but loving, ugh, I could gush all day. Here are some quotes.😘
“There’s no room inside of her, but I fuck her like I belong there.” More spicy quotes at the bottom!
“I’m Cynthia, Ama’s mother.”
Well, fuck.
“Hi, good. I mean, good to meet you.”
“But I don’t know how to make it happen other than just…hanging around. I’ve asked out exactly four women in my life, and statistically, I’m not great at this.”
“Did I just kill her with a peanut butter donut?”
“Sir, I’m sure she’s not dead.”
“Nice to know you can keep a cool head under pressure.”
I feel like today was anything but “a cool head under pressure,” but I guess we’ll leave that between me and Josephine, the 9-1-1 operator.
The past and present (and when you realize WHY the past times are so specific!!!)
“His hair is long again. He has half of it tied back, out of his face. I called it a man bun once, and he gave me the silent treatment for the rest of the day.”
The ending was so great and I think it was just what Ama and Elliot needed, and it showed a lot of growth on both of their parts.
I blink at him and swallow. “Okay.”
“I’m gonna date the shit outta you, though.”</spoiler?
This review was basically a little fan-girl essay, so, sorry if it wasn’t helpful in convincing you to read this but read it anyway!!
“Are you fucking kidding me with this car?!”
“It’s drivable! It’s fine!”
There is exactly one thing that would have made this book better and it was if her car had broken down when Elliot was in it, just so he could rub it in her face! IYKYK
“Every single warning light turns on—more than usual. Apparently my tires are flat, my oil needs changing, and my window washer liquid is low. The only thing going for me is the needle pointing to a half tank of gas, but even that is questionable with the low fuel indicator glaring at me. As my engine putters, I consider just how bad it would be to drive twenty blocks in a car that is clearly screaming for death.”
One final thought, to leave you all on a high: Elliot’s love for Ama is top shelf. That’s all.
“I nod. I agree. I listen. But I’ve accepted the fact that I just drove fifteen miles at two thirty in the morning to squeeze into this bathtub and listen to Ama wheel-spin. It’s fine. I may fall asleep, slip under, and drown. But it’s fine.”
Some spicy quotes:🥵️
“You can help me set up sparklers,” she says in a silky voice, as if sparklers means something else entirely.
“Is it really setting up sparklers? Because you know how I feel about you needing an assistant—”
“I mean, come back and I’ll fuck you in your truck.”
“What’s wrong?” I grip her hips.
“Fucking god, Elliot,” she whimpers. “I forgot how big you are.”
“You’ll have to forgive me forgetting,” she says, reaching forward to finger the button at my collar. “You were in those skinny jeans and that plaid shirt. It made you look like a missionary come to save my filthy soul.”
Thank you so much to the author, Forever Publishing, and Netgalley for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!!

What an amazing book! Full review to come when my brain is working!
I really enjoyed this! It had an interesting magic system and world and I liked each of the characters! There were funnies and sad parts and I'm hoping there's going to be a book 2!
This was pretty much a full queer cast which I didn't expect but really appreciated! Also, it was nice to read during Pride Month! The characters sexuality wasn't discussed in the book because it was accepted in their world, which was refreshing.
It gave me Six of Crows and A Darker Shade of Magic vibes - which was super fun. I also didn't realize that this book was being pitched with Six of Crows vibes, so I felt pretty vindicated when I saw that 😂
Some things I didn't like:
🌞It's not that I didn't like the magic system, it's just I wish it was a little more fleshed out. It had the potential to be really good, but it fell flat in most parts.
🌞Gabriel - this guy was kinda an idiot.
🌞The errors. Normally, I can overlook grammatical or language errors, but there were a lot in this book and it sometimes took me out of the story 😅 But, it's indie, so I'm not going to hold it against the author (or my star rating)
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a physical copy for review 💛💛

I don't even know what to write right now...this book was so great and emotional and my brain is empty 😭
This was so magical, I can’t wait to read the next one! Maia was so strong and brave and Edan (if you’ve read The Dragon’s Promise!!!!👀) was so great.
This sequel was just as beautiful as book 1 😭
“Be it bright or dark, you are the light that makes my lantern shine.”
"When I burn this world to embers, and you paint me as the villain, remember, I really did try to be good...once."
This book consumed my life. Cleaning wasn't done. Work wasn't done. Life was on hold. Healthy? Maybe not. Worth it? Absolutely. The main plot point of this book is a major spoiler for book 1, so if you read this and haven’t read TBOA… *shrug*
"This is how the world ends"
The Book of Azrael ended on a heart-shattering cliffhanger and this one picks right back up and stomps all over your soul. In a good way. In a way that makes you cry every few pages.
In a way that makes you highlight 517 parts in the book, making it impossible to find things for your review 🙃 Dianna, our loving main character, is not so loving in this book. She is downright evil. She kills all those in her path with no hesitation and no remorse.
"Just remember you may be immortal, but your friends, family, and those who look up to you aren't. So how many do you want to lose because you won't let me do what I need to do?"
She is the epitome of morally black. But she's in pain, she's hurting, and her only way to fix that pain is revenge. Get revenge on everyone who wronged her. She's broken and tired, alone and damaged.
"A lock on a door in a house rattled"
Samkiel, our cinnamon bun World Ender, will never give up on Dianna. He would burn the world for her, so when everyone is against her, he was the only one standing by her side, even if she didn't know it.
"She will kill me! Aren’t you supposed to be the good guy?”
I twisted the handle, locking him in, and leaned against the door. “I never once said that I was good. That is just a fable you all tell yourselves that I will show mercy. You believe that to be the law and govern the realms, I have to be at least neutral, but sometimes a king has to be a monster.”
I know a lot of the book community focuses on the MMC of books, but I think Dianna shines through so much more and deserves the spotlight! Her character growth (in both directions) is amazing and her determination and loyalty are unwavering.
"Just go home. Go back to your castle and towers of silver. Go home and let the monsters handle their business."
This is a book about secrets. This book will show you how secrets can rip the universe apart. How family betrays family and there are liars everywhere.
“I buried my father. I buried my mother. Now, I will bury her.”
“Not the ideal vacation, but this is where you wanted to go. Better late than never.”
WHY AMBER??? 😭😭😭 This was the saddest thing, her taking Gabby’s ashes to the beach that they were going to visit!!!
She is hunting down everyone who was involved in Gabby’s death. I felt so so bad when it was revealed that pretty much everyone betrayed her. LIKE HOW COULD YOU ALL?? Especially Drake, that one hit her (AND ME) hard. But the scene where she gets to their mansion, perfection.
“Where’s my wife?” Ethan asked. His answer came a second later. Dianna emerged from the darkness, her crimson gaze sweeping over the celestials and holding on me. I felt Ethan shift behind me, and her eyes flickered to him, her expression twisting. I knew two things with absolute certainty. First, when she came out to fight, she wore her hair back from her face as she did now, her long ponytail swinging behind her. Second, this cruel creature wasn’t my Dianna.
Years of war had steeled my stomach to gruesome atrocities, but seeing her so casually holding the head of Ethan’s wife in her palm had my gut twisting.”
The fight scene between Tobias, Dianna, Logan, and Neverra was amazing! Dianna getting eaten by Tobias and then killing him from the inside, I died!😂 That was great. Logan and Neverra putting their armour on and saying they’re going to help, and Dianna saying, I got it. 😂 Like no big deal, just got swallowed by a huge lizard dragon thing, but it’s all good, it's dead. LOL!
“The room shook again, and [Neverra] looked up. “What’s happening?”
Another roar spilt the sky, and small rocks rained from the ceiling.
“It’s Dianna. I think she is working through her problems.”
This book is about healing. From grief and guilt. About new family and lost family, forming friendships, and remembering happy memories.
For such a dark book, Dianna’s sass and humour really shone through. It was a nice comedic relief and made her all that more real. Also, Samkiel catching up on the language and being funny too was great.
“Who knew kidnapping a witch, slaughtering a coven, and destroying a vampire line would put Samkiel on such high alert?”
"Is this us flirting? You yell and toss me through a few stories when you don't get your way, or perhaps you'll drop another building on me."
The reveal!! Kaden is Samkiel’s brother, and he has more siblings, and his father was kinda garbage…PHEW, I did not see most of that coming!
Also, that bitch Vincent.
Also, that bitch Nismera.
There is so much more I could say about everything, and I have a million more quotes highlighted but this is long enough, and just, please read this series!
My Insta post for this book!

Initial thoughts:
Full review to come but basically, get ready to cry, scream, and roll into a ball while reading this. I have never felt so many different emotions while reading one book!
Thank you so much to Amber, Rose and Star Publishing, and Good Girls PR and Marketing for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
