There had been no question of going on without her. No question of leaving her behind

I love it when the enemies to lovers starts off where one of them, or both of them, tries to kill each other - anything less is just rivals, not enemies and it doesn’t hit that top-tier trope feeling for me. 😂

They were linked by magic, not love. Duty, not affection.

Okay, this book was really great! There were twists and turns, reveals and betrayals that kept my head spinning and my mind whirling.

Wren’s character development, from bratty, entitled heir, to brave, loyal, and determined warrior was a nice thing to watch. She stopped putting her selfish needs above the greater good and focused instead on the, well, the greater good.

"We make a good team.”
“A good team?” Wren repeated, arching an eyebrow. “I thought you said we were a ‘bad idea’?”
“Aren’t we?” he said, meeting her gaze.
Wren shrugged, going for indifference. “Maybe I like bad ideas.”

Julian was the perfect combination of traits for me. I love a good hard-shelled, can-defeat-anything, braver-than-anyone character, but I also love the ones who are afraid. The killers with fears. Jullians fear, in this case, were ghosts. Not a great thing to be afraid of when the land is crawling with ghosts, but at least he's honest😂

She met Julian’s wide, startled eyes. She shook her head. “Never run.”

It did get creepy at some points, as one would expect from a story where some people can control bones and some can control ghosts. Anyway, Julian’s healthy fear of the revenants, the tier 5 ghosts that can inhabit their bodies and move around in them (zombie-like), was refreshing.

“I think that went well,” Leo said brightly. “For me, anyway.”

Leo was a stereotypical dumb blonde until you realized there was nothing dumb about his mind. Boy had no self-preservation, that was obvious 😂

Her father, Odile, the Knights, the Regent, The Queen, all of the plot twists and reveals means I need book 2 please and thank you.

Right now.

Please.

Thank you so much to the author and Simon and Schuster Canada for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

 ...I didn’t really enjoy this.

“You are nobody.”
“Excuse me?” A wave of irrational anger overrode the pain of her landing. “I am your wife.”

The stakes are high at the beginning of this conclusion to the Secret Shanghai universe and I was on the edge of my, metaphorical, seat the entire time.

If anyone played their hand wrong here, this was international war.

There were so many things going on, so many bad guys and plot lines, but I wasn’t confused so that shows how well everything was laid out in this book.

I loved Rosalind and Orion, Fortune and the Huntsman. Every time we learned more about the villain, I won’t say who because of spoilers for Foul Lady Fortune, I wanted to both strangle them and cry for Orion.

I loved Celia and Oliver, they were adorable, and Oliver’s sacrifice in the middle (not sacrifice as I’m dead though 😅), perfection. I think that was absolutely amazing and it showed Celia that she was wanted and loved.

Alisa, Phoebe, and Silas were also great characters, perfectly spy-worthy and drama filled. I would like a series on Alisa next please 🙏

So, if you like:

Murder and mayhem
Amnesia-ed MMC
Demisexual, Bi, & Trans reps
Spies and assassins
A country at war
Betrayal and twists ALL THE TIME
A love story that will push you off a cliff

Then read this book. I mean…don’t start with this book, start with These Violent Delights, but you’ll get here eventually AND THEN you can read this book!

There are also some long-awaited cameos in this book and yes, I loved every second of them.

Thank you so much to Simon and Schuster Canada and the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!!

My fragile heart needed these two stories.

If this book wasn't already a 5 star read, the last line would have absolutely made it one.

Excuse me as I FUCKING WEEP 😭😭😭

I loved every single second of this book

This book was a super fun rom-com! I liked Nate and Anastasia, both separately and together. There was a lot of humour (I love funny books) and spice and I really love any type of skating book (hockey or figure skating), so I liked that this had both AND Nate tried figure skating for a little while too.

But, I had some things I really didn’t like. It was marketed (to me, at least) as an enemies to lovers (or rivals/annoyances to lovers, whatever you want to call romcom enemies to lovers) but they hooked up way too soon, so none of that tension was there. I like slow burn and this just wasn’t that. The second thing was that I think the author took all of the popular romance tropes on TikTok and threw them into this book, even when they didn’t fit. If I had to read another awkward placement of “good girl” I was going to throw the book. Don’t build the scene around the trope, guarantee I won’t like it then. It needs to be organically put into the scene.

Not to leave this on a negative note, so, overall, I would definitely recommend it to people who like hockey/sports romance with funny, spicy, and serious parts! Just be ready for trope-city.

What a fun, horrific book! I love all of the characters and I'm excited to see how it plays out in book 2!

Well, I love Maverick. And Clover.

What a fun take on a hockey romance! Throw in a bit of forbidden fruit and mental health talk and you’ve got an amazing story.

I didn’t think about how hard it would have been for Mav after the carnival incident and seeing him struggle through his anxiety, guilt, depression, and self-worth was such a great experience.

Clover was cute and her struggles with her garbage ex were so sad and it was well done, his manipulation. Ugh. What a pile of human trash.

The forbidden fruit trope?

* They hook up one night only for him to walk into class and see she’s his new professor 🤭🤭

* And she’s 8/9 years older than him😏

* And he only likes older women because he is very…big? Like, women-have-run-away-after-he’s-dropped-his-pants big 😂

And true to Helena Hunting stories, this one is full of funny moments and I literally snorted at certain parts 😂 I have a bunch of tabs in my book but I’m lazy and I don’t want to write them out, so just take my word for it 😂😂
