What an amazing, beautiful, and terrible ending 😭😭

What a story! I was gasping at points 😂

Excuse me as I process this book

4.5 stars

What an interesting dystopian full of twists, comedy, and action! Man, this book was fun!

This was a really fun book! I love carnival books and this has a nice amount of that - I maybe would have liked a bit more - and the magical aspect, and the consequences, were really interesting and unique. There were twists I didn’t see coming, that made my jaw drop, and the ending was pretty satisfying. Overall, I definitely recommend!

“I know what I know. My secrets are deep. But long have I kept them. And long will they keep.”

This book was everything I wanted it to be. Atmospheric. Dark. Magical. Heartbreaking. Horrifying. Poetic. The POV change was necessary, considering the end of book one, and I was a big fan of the new POVs we got!

Ione’s entire body went still, her leg tensing in the highwayman’s grip. Elm’s voice came from the back of his throat. “Get your fucking hand off of her.”

Elm
Excuse me!?

“Then do it,” he whispered, gliding a hand up her spine. “Use me. Toy with me. Feel something, Ione.”

This tortured soul was perfect. His anxiety, his pain, his strength, his love, everything about Elm was top-tier boyfriend material.

“Are you angry with me?”
Ione’s gaze lifted slowly to his face. “No. Why would you think that?”
“We haven’t found your Card.”
“That’s not your fault. You didn’t hide it.”
“No, but...you just seem—” He swallowed. “I don’t do well with long silences. I tend to overthink.”

I loved him and Ione together, both brutalized by Hauth and learning to overcome that trauma. His anxieties felt real, things that I’ve thought before, his reactions to situations. I love him.

“I’d be your King, but always your servant. Never your keeper.”

SWOON

“Men have no use for the Maiden. What is beauty to real power? My father never let me touch his Providence Cards. But the Maiden—the Maiden I was gifted freely, like a horse a lump of sugar. Something sweet to distract me from the bit they shoved in my mouth.”

I also loved Ione. What a character!! The reveal, of what Hauth put her through/did to her was absolutely horrific and her bravery and perseverance was truly incredible.

It was surprisingly heavy, her hair. Dense. Long enough to wrap around his fist and tug.

Did I say how much I love Elm?

“You cut her hair?” Whatever crossed his face stopped the Nightmare in his tracks. The monster peered through narrowed eyes, dropping his gaze to Ravyn’s knotted hands.
“It will grow back,” he said slowly.

Ravyn
My stupid bird, oh how I love you. His pain for seeing Elspeth the way she was was so well written and I love him so much. This review is going well 😂 TLDR: Sophie loves everything

There once was a girl, clever and good, who tarried in shadow in the depths of the wood. There also was a King—a shepherd by his crook, who reigned over magic and wrote the old book. The two were together, so the two were the same: The girl, the King, and the monster they became.

The Nightmare was such a unique character.

“The Spirit of the Wood has no need for crude walls or rope restraints, you little twit. Our captors are decidedly human.”

He was 500 years old but sometimes he acted like he was 5😂 There were times I hated him and times where I felt so much sorrow for him, but I think he got the ending he needed/deserved.

Petyr pulled back. “What the hell happened—is Jes all right?”
He tripped over himself, getting to the Nightmare. He reached for Jespyr.
“I’m carrying her—”
“Shove off, you ancient windbag.”

There were so many satisfying parts and saddening parts and I honestly have nothing else to say because it was just great! The funny parts were so bluntly thrown in that I almost always snickered out loud😂

“For fuck’s sake, Tyrn,” a booming voice called. “Stop cowering. They’re only trees.”
“Only trees? When was the last time that wiry shrub in your courtyard ripped itself free and wrapped branches around your neck, Spindle?”

I’ll leave the review here, but if you’ve made it this far, read this duology!

Nothing is free, the trees called after them. Nothing is safe. Magic is love, but also it’s hate. It comes at a cost. You’re found and you’re lost. Magic is love, but also—
“For mercy’s sake.” The Nightmare spat phlegm onto roots. “Shut the fuck up.”

Holy good lord this book was amazing. The rhyming, the characters, the plot, everything was great. I wish I’d tabbed this book because there’s so many quotes I want to share but I just wanted to read it and not stop 😂 So good!

This is the story of how I save my mother. And, as it has been from the beginning, this remains the story of how I die.

3.5 stars

This was magical and woven with fairytale delight. I felt like I was in the forest with them at times, going through and experiencing the wonder and horror of it. I felt like I was falling through Wonderland, with illusions, masks, and madness making up the majority of the book. Clara was a relatable character, she had a disability similar to mine and it never stopped her from life.

All that said, I didn’t really enjoy the story the further into it I got. It was confusing and strange - and not a good strange. There were too many fairytales thrown in and it became muddled. While I appreciated Clara having a disability in the beginning, I didn’t find it was described well. We were TOLD she had a disability over and over (and over and over) but we never FELT it, you know?

I also didn’t like how a few things played out, like, at all. If I say anymore it’s going to get really negative, so, I’m going to stop here. I may or may not read the next book, when it comes out, since the story wasn’t wrapped up, but I honestly don’t know if I care enough.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

For a heartbeat, she let herself wonder what it would be like if Zacharias Coleson stayed dead.

This was a really fun read! I love books where the main characters have to go on an adventure, and having one of them dead?? Even better.

“You’re not alive anymore and I’m still forced to look at your face!”
“How are you literally dead and still this insufferable?”

I’m kidding, obviously, but it was such a unique plot point, Zach being a ghost, and I enjoyed it a lot! Normally, I’m a die-hard enemies to lovers, but this rivalry was top-notch!

“Sorry to break it to you, but you’re not the first person who’s ever kicked the bucket and turned into a ghost. And unfortunately for you, I don’t care enough about you to stick around and enjoy the show.”

I about DIED when she started insulting him after he died, like, get it girl!

Technically, Zach had won, but only because he slipped halfway down, slicing his arm open on a stray wire in the mesh, and fell the rest of the way to the ground. Cara wasn’t the one who’d spent the night getting stitched up in the ER, so really, who had been the real winner there?

I love how they were always at each others’ throats and Cara’s viciousness didn’t disappear when Zach died, she just continued on insulting him like a badass!

“Don’t talk,” she whispered. “Let me handle this.”
“Why can’t I talk?” Zach complained. “She can’t even hear me.”
“Yes, but I can, so shut up.”

Banter is my one true love. Give me banter or give me death.

“And how are you sure you’re not imagining me right now?”
“I don’t know,” she replied. “Maybe I am.”
“So touch me,” he said. “Make me real.”

There were lots of funny moments, which by now, you should all know I love! Even in the face of death, Cara had something witty or sarcastic to say.

Wasn’t that what they were all doing? Whenever you put on a seat belt or wore a helmet, you were delaying the inevitable, hitting snooze on a clock that continued to count down. Pulling the blanket over your head and telling Death, “Just five more minutes, please.”

She was also incredibly brave despite the literal horrors they faced on this quest and I love brave characters. There is one point where a ghost is trying to kill Zach and the ghost ignores her, you know, thinking she wasn’t a threat: “You,” she said, despite her bruised windpipe, “should have been paying attention to me.”

YES GIRL!

“It was only you. It has always been only you.”
“Go ahead, break my heart. I don’t mind. You’re a flame I would happily let burn me alive.”

This is definitely a book of “he falls first” and I really do love that trope, it’s adorable! Zach was the perfect golden-retriever-marshmallow-ghost-boy-thing and I love him.

And suddenly Zach was in front of her, brandishing a stalactite like a sword. “Like hell you’re touching her,” he said, voice low and dangerous. And tremoring. Just the tiniest bit. Zach?
“Coleson—”
“Stay behind me,” he ordered. “If it wants you, it’s gonna have to go through me first.”

We also had some “touch her and die” moments and I was living for those!

“I’m glad you’re not dead, so I will ground you only for the next six weeks.”
Cara’s mouth fell open. “The next six weeks?”
“Did you think I would be so grateful you were alive I would let you off with no consequences?”

I hope we get to see more of her family (Zach’s family can rot in hell) because I’m interested to see how everything will play out.

Thank you so much to the author and HarperTeen/HarperCollins Children's Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

“I want you to let go and show me how fucking bright you burn."

Excuse me while I swoon.

I was surrounded by…nature…There were birds chirping.
Leaves rustling.
Wind gusting.
Silence.
I hated it.

When the sharply dressed, city girl Adalyn is forced to move to a small town in North Carolina after embarrassing the soccer team her father owns, she meets Cameron, the grumpy, retired soccer star who’s hiding out. And by meets, I mean she runs him over with her car. We love a meet-cute. 😂Also, there may have been an elusive rooster involved.

"That all of this was my fault in the first place so I didn’t think I had the right to complain."

This was such a fun, and funny, read! Adalyn was such a well-developed character that you could *feel* her insecurities, anxiety, and panic that stemmed from her dirtbag dad and ex. I love a book where you feel the mental health issues instead of one where you’re *told* about the mental health issues. I can connect with the character more that way. She was always trying to please everyone, even at the sake of her own happiness. Every time her ex and her dad were on the page, I wanted to reach in and punch them in their little, sexist faces. The funny moments throughout the book were top-tier, I am not a fan of most romances if there is no funny.

“I could take you.” Her voice turned into a whisper. “I think.”
“You think? That’s not very threatening,” I muttered.

Cameron was the absolute perfect grumpy, gruff, tattooed, sport-man. ATHLETE. That’s the word I was looking for! God. Anyway, you don’t find out until near the end why Cameron is hiding out in the middle of nowhere, and while it was a little disappointing, it didn’t ruin the fact that he was so great. His love for his two cats and his fear, or distrust, of small goats (or, I guess he also didn’t like normal-sized goats) was endearing. Did I mention he is covered in tattoos? Maybe I should mention it again?

“I was not looking at you.” I whispered, cheeks flaming.
“You were, and my ego fucking loved it.” He braced his hands on the island and leaned forward. “Other parts of me, too”

Brandy, the blind, anxious goat, was my favourite character. She was perfect.

“Do you always have to be so unpleasant?” I retorted.
The girls oooh-ed.
“I don’t know.” He shrugged. “Do you plan on bringing anything but trouble into town?”
The girls aaah-ed.

The girl's soccer team was adorable and a fun little thing for the main characters to, eventually, bond over. The fact that half of the stuff that came out of their mouths made Adalyn and Cameron just blankly stare at them was gold.

“Try to ignore it. Close your eyes. Look away. Maybe go away.”

Overall, an absolutely adorable book with funny moments, sad moments, spicy moments, and everything moments.

“You were looking at me the way you are now. Just like that. I didn’t want it to end.”
“Like what?”
“Like I’m something precious. Worth looking at.”
His face fell. “Why would you think otherwise?”
“Because no one ever looks at me that way.”

Thank you so so much to the author and Simon and Schuster Canada for sending me my first physical ARC!! Ahh!

On a scale of one to orgasm, he’s a bean-flicking dream.

I got a PR box with this ARC 😭😭😭😭 My first PR box 😭😭

“You are a wizard with your mouth.” He grins. “Anytime you want a bread ride, I’m your man.”

My favourite couple from this whole universe is Lily and Randy, so I am zero percent surprised that I absolutely loveeee BJ!!! He was so loyal, funny, chill, and just an amazing guy. Winter was absolutely great too. She had been/was going through so much, but she still stayed dedicated and positive. Her family and financial struggles were so heartbreaking to read but she had such a good sense of humour! I laughed out loud so many times, you know, the ones that burst out of you and you kinda look around to see if anyone noticed. The *incident* that pushed everything off a cliff (hmm, pun not intended) was terrifying and I was about to cry with Winter.

“Sometimes people have to find the bottom before they start looking for a way back to the surface,” Logan says softly.
“I don’t want the bottom to be a grave.”

It was a great twist on the standard hockey trope, guy is hockey player, girl is figure skater or just a random person. BJ was the figure skater and Winter was the hockey player! I love when tropes are the opposite of what’s “normal,” it’s like a breath of fresh air.

“Take the leap, Winter. I promise the landing is soft on this one.”

Winter was obviously the character who was struggling a lot more, BJ came from a life of privilege, but I also like how BJ’s struggles were mostly subtle until I was suddenly almost throwing my iPad across the room. When you read this book, and get to THAT scene, you’ll understand my horror! It was a build-up from a situation that the reader kinda knew was happening, but we didn’t think it would go that far, or at least I didn’t! Phew, that was a hard section to read, near the end.

“Are you worried you’ll make it a self-fulfilling prophecy?” I settle a hand on her waist.
“Maybe?” She shrugs. “I’m so accustomed to being stressed out, I don’t know how not to be.”

Read this book (and all the other books in the series!!) if you like:

💜Full-sleeved, tattooed figure skater MMC
💜“I got you. You can let go.”
💜Pierced 🍆
💜Strong but soft hockey-playing FMC
💜Silk scarves and feathers
💜Overcoming abuse and abuse-related guilt
💜Funny moments galore

I am pretttty sure this book was leading up to another spin-off and I’m prettttty sure I know one of the characters, so I’ll leave you with this vague quote:

“What the fuck is going on here?”
“Is that Dracula?” Rose’s nose is smushed against my arm. I can’t see through the sea of bodies surrounding me.
“It sounds like him.”
“Group hug. Want in?” River asks.
“Physical contact is something I try to avoid, but thanks,” Laughlin says.

One final thought! The ending was also another instance of “opposite trope/normal” and I am LIVING for it!

Thank you so much, Helena, for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!!
