It's a cosy mystery novel, but a little too simple and easy to figure out for my taste. It's also a little long and repetitive - some place read more as an Evian advert than a who-done-it. I preserved to the end for closure, but it didn't have a shocking or surprising turn of events.

The artwork is beautiful, and what caught my initial interest. But I felt the story was a little rushed, and I don't think the end makes much sense. Its a quick and easy read, and visually pleasing with a really nice colour palette, but it's not my favourite graphic novel.

I loved this book! I was hooked pretty much immediately. The world building was great, and the story unfolds with a great pace, making a real page turner. There's suspense and drama, and I loved the entire plot. It's a really great sci-fi fantasy - highly recommend.

The story focuses on two families in different time periods living at the Toll House, switching between the tollkeeper and his wife in the 1800s to current day with Kelda and her son Dylan. I enjoyed the story overall, but felt it lacked depth. You learn early on of the historic events of the house, and so it's easy to see how they link with the mysterious and unsettling happenings of the current day. I enjoyed the various relationships between the characters, and that's what saved the story for me. Some twists are better than others - the Simon reveal I found a little disappointing . It was a good spooky read, and I thought the two timelines were told really well.

I didn't realise this book followed on from the These Violent Delights duology - so I won't be reading those now, as this story reveals how that plot ends.
That being said, I very much enjoyed this book, and had enough information to follow the characters and story without reading the previous duology. I really enjoyed watching the plot unfold and the unexpected twists - some parts seemed quite obvious but others are shockingly good. The relationships between all of the characters are beautifully developed. I'll definitely read book 2 when it's released.

DNF at 15%. As someone who did their PhD in Scotland, I thought I'd really enjoy this book, but I just couldn't persevere. Not a fan of the writing style - there are phrases that just ruined the illusion for me - making a brew with two tea bags, ordering a double earl grey, putting three coats of lipgloss on then brushing your teeth, signing the bill for round of drinks. I realise the story is based on an America abroad, but it took my focus anyway from the story at hand. It also introduced too many people too quickly, with one large scene very early on, so I struggled to actually follow whos who and their relationship to one another.

I found this book too long and a little too convoluted. I enjoy a thriller, particularly one that you can't easy figure out, but the twists here were just too contrived for my taste. I read through to the end, as I needed closure, but the pace is rather slow and I didn't warm to the characters.

This was a dark and rather depressing read, but it kept me pulled in enough to see it through to the end. It's a little slow for my taste, and quite repetitive. A decent read overall but not my favourite.

The concept of this book sounded so interesting and intriguing, but overall I was rather underwhelmed. It's less horror than I initially anticipated - more gothic fantasy I guess. I felt it was a little too long and repetitive. I wasn't shocked by the twists or reveals as it all seemed rather obvious, and certain elements were left as loose ends. The ending lacks solid resolution.
It kept my interest enough to finish, but didn't build the emotional connection I'd want in order to really care for the characters and their journey.
