This was a bit disjointed in the beginning. I didn’t fully understand the badlands part. And it felt odd where we went from cannibals to godmothers and magic.
I did like bone dog and the smart ass witch!!
It was nice how Mara wanted to save her sister from further abuse though. That part resonated with me.

I have been doing a lot of learning about Canada's history with our genocide of indigenous population, but I haven't yet read through the full truth and reconciliation report. But, this title was excellent to help me better understand the atrocities the Canadian Government sanctioned against people who have the rightful claim to so much of our nation.
I was in grade 10 when the last residential school was shut down. This history, isn't that long ago, and I will continue to work to educate myself on the past, and what I can actively do moving forward, to commit to my own efforts towards truth and reconciliation.

Yet another story that had me in tears throughout.
I enjoyed how the fig tree was a character. Despite the jumping back and forth through specific time periods each setting specific to that time was eloquently described.
Not knowing much about the conflict in Cyprus during the 70’s i learned a fair amount about it.
The narrators were excellent at balancing accents which helped to strengthen the contrast between Greeks and Turks.

Wow, this novel made me weep. A magnificent story of bravery, perseverance, and inner strength. If only I had half the courage Santiago did!
Another gem from my favourite author. A comical look at one of God's most revered angels, and his dumb mishaps.
For all those scuba divers out there, you may find this tale to be an enjoyable read. I actually learnt a little bit about aquatic life through reading this novel. Makes you wonder how much we really do understand about our oceans and it's vast contents.
