A sweet and sincere romance, and I believe her first LGBTQIA work, “Flirting Lessons” is everything that I’ve come to expect from Jasmine Guillory.

Total soap opera with lots of betrayal, obsession, and class dynamics (it’s based on Wuthering Heights) but I still enjoyed it! The audio was top notch with a full cast, including Johnny Weir. Coincidentally I listened while the figure skating worlds were going on, and Madison Chock and Evan Bates, the US ice dancing pair and also married in real life, won their third ice dance title.

The audio was fantastic! The story really came to life with George Guidall’s narration. It’s a little longer than the typical audiobook, but it’s worth it.

The Golem and the Jinni is partly historical fiction set in NYC, with alternating timelines between the FMC (golem) and MMC (jinni), it’s mysterious but I wouldn’t call it a mystery, it’s fantasy but more magical realism, add some found family elements, plus themes of identity and ambition, with just a smidge of horror. It’s one of those books that almost can’t be categorized, and I’m discovering that those are the books that really stick with me, with writers who are doing something totally original and of their own.
