⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5

I have not read a Kristin Hannah novel in a long time and I was pleased with this one.

This historical fiction novel is set during the Great Depression (1930s) in the Texas Panhandle and California. It follows the story of Elsa Martinelli and her family’s struggle to make it as wheat farmers during a years long drought.

The story was slow and depressing… but in a good way. It helped depict the tough conditions during that time. The writing was good and the characters were well developed.

Overall, a nice book for historical lovers! ♥️

I ended up enjoying this book after a slow start. In the beginning, I needed a little more world building other than just a city in France. The first few chapters reminded me of The Gilded Wolves until the characters started to develop and it got better.

Lou was my favorite character! I loved the enemies to lovers plot and the twists and turns. I will definitely read the rest of the series.
