I bought this book because I like having books with small chapters (or in this case letters) that I can read just one or two before bed. In this case it was a page turner and I finished it very quickly.
Beautiful book! Visually very stunning and will have to read again soon.
Because it is based on a real person and I can tell that the author did a lot of research and wanted to bring the character to light without too much fanciful intervention, I really praised the author for doing that. However some of it felt like filling pages for the sake of filling pages. I think this book could’ve been condensed to 400 pages and not 600. Moreover I felt like an epilogue was definitely needed with some kind of explanation about Emma‘s life. Even if it wasn’t about Emma but more about the fate of England it would’ve been nice.
Good opening line. The first paragraph really had me hooked. However, I felt like the characters were a little flat and the plot felt a little under developed. I agree with other readers that the book seems to come to an end a little too quickly with more of a ping and not a bang. A good quick read though.
Julie & Julia meets the Yellow Wallpaper. Good story, but I honestly wanted more Nellie and less Alice.
P.S. Surprised by all the Nate worship here in the reviews. Yes, Nate wasn’t at all like Nellie’s husband, but he certainly had some character flaws that illustrate the through line of misogyny.
