If you find this topic interesting, I highly recommend Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. That book shifts the focus away from the killer and gives a voice to the victims, which was such a refreshing and powerful take.
Graphic: Grief, Stalking, Death of parent, Alcohol
Moderate: Alcoholism, Vomit, Murder
Speaking of POVs… this is a prime example of a male author writing female characters questionably. There are three female perspectives, one of which is young and attractive and the other two are middle aged. Those two keep staring at themselves in the mirror, worrying about aging and their looks. Really? 🙄
Not a favorite, unfortunately. 2.5/5
Graphic: Confinement, Hate crime, Racism, Kidnapping
Moderate: Alcoholism, Death, Violence, Murder
Overall, I can see why this is considered a classic but I don’t think it aged particularly well. There’s some outdated/triggering language and poor representation—something to keep in mind if you're picking it up.
The writing style (mostly dialogue-heavy storytelling) wasn’t my favorite.
Graphic: Addiction, Alcoholism, Chronic illness, Drug abuse, Drug use, Grief, Alcohol
Moderate: Death, Suicide
This book tries so hard to be offbeat that it feels like chaos for chaos’s sake. There are too many plotlines, too many eccentric characters, and too many random scenarios that don’t quite come together. It’s as if the author had a list of quirky ideas and crammed every single one into the story. While some moments are amusing, the lack of focus made it a frustrating read.
Moderate: Death, Excrement, Death of parent
Almost DNF’d this one because of the way it played into harmful mental health stigmas and misogynistic views on women’s appearances. Thankfully, this improved in the second half!
👎 Without any spoilers: the ending was disappointing (and the more I think about it the more it winds me up!)
Graphic: Body shaming, Confinement, Domestic abuse, Emotional abuse, Mental illness, Physical abuse, Torture, Toxic relationship
While I loved the overall premise, some of the characters felt a bit over the top, which made it hard for me to fully connect with them. That took away some of the impact for me.
