This book has amazing hacks and tips for all kinds of things from making your own crafts to reusing objects in unexpected ways. You can make your own tablet holder, pom-poms, or tote bag out of old materials. You can reuse carbingers, rubber bands, or binder clips in new ways. There are recipes to cook, activities to do, and crafts to make. There are even studying hacks to help you do well in school.

I really liked the short biographies of scientists and inventors (many of them children or teens) who have made amazing discoveries and created their own ingenious hacks to make the world a better place. There is one about a monitoring device that detects illegal logging in the rainforest, and another one that provides medical testing for only one penny so that people can monitor their own health.

Every page is full of colorful photos, and little boxes of information and instructions that make this book attractive and easy to read. I love the design!

I found it funny that this book presents regular arithmetic as a "hack". The "new math" that is taught in public schools today is so unnecessarily complex that plain arithmetic has now become a "hack". If basic addition and subtraction has now become a "hack", I fear for the future of the human race.

This book gives the backstories to dozens of everyday things with chapters about medicine, toys, food, sports, and clothing. There is a whole chapter all about ancient inventions like the wheel, the compass, or hourglass. There is also a chapter about traditions around the globe like flags, manners, mistletoe, and parades. Where did all these things come from?! This book gives the answers.

Every page is full of colorful photos, and little boxes of information and instructions that make this book attractive and easy to read. I love the design!

I especially loved the part about ancient toys from the Greek and Roman empires. Children had dolls and toy chariots and pretend knights going way back in history! There is also a section about clothing and makeup from the Victorian era that was dyed with arsenic or lead, leading to people being poisoned. There was also arsenic in wallpaper at such high levels that it may have been what killed Napoleon.

One thing I really appreciate about this book is that the text is very clear about what is a theory and what is proven fact. It will say things like "scientists believe" that this thing happened billions of years ago. I know that I can trust the facts in this book, because they are careful to only state the absolute proven truth.

It's just amazing to see how the microscope was invented, how germs were discovered, and how vaccines were developed. Such a cool book!

This board book helps little readers to explore the different types of planes, ships, and cars. As you lift each flap on the page, a new type of transportation is revealed. There is a hot air balloon hidden behind some clouds, and a surprise submarine hiding under the waves.

I think it's very cool that all the flaps are different sizes. There are big ones and little ones to help develop hand-eye coordination in little baby readers. The flaps are fairly thick and sturdy, but the smaller ones are still liable to get torn if you aren't careful.

One main kind of transportation that is NOT included in this book is trains. So if your little one was hoping for a book with trains, this is not it. There are only cars, trucks, boats, and planes.

I love the colorful illustrations! Every page is so attractive with bright colors that are sure to grab the attention of little readers. And all the little animal characters are so cute!

Jane and Mark are caught between the forces of good and evil. As the N.I.C.E. corporation offers Mark a job to lure him into their wicked schemes, Jane is approached by a very different group of people who have gathered around Ransom. They each have to decide what they believe in when it turns out that archangels and ancient legends are real.

This book has a very different format from the other books in the series, and Ransom is a side character in his own story. The trouble with Jane and Mark being the main characters, is that I don't really like either of them. They are so wishy-washy and both their personalities are unattractive. However, they do both have extreme character development and really interesting internal journeys.

I really love the vivid writing style. Lewis is a master of words, and he really brings out strong emotions in every scene. However, the philosophical ramblings and the religious explorations go on for entire chapters, and they slow down the story. And there were a lot of gruesome details that were upsetting to read about. Brilliant writing, but not comfortable or enjoyable to read. There's also some seriously questionable theology in there, but maybe that was just imaginative license for the story.

One of the things that I find really exciting and attractive about the first two books in the series is the world-building of the alien planets. Of course, that is missing in this book, but we do get a lot of mystical history of Avalon and the legends of Merlin and King Arthur Pendragon. I enjoyed all the references to these old legends and how they were incorporated into the story.

Overall, I don't think this is Lewis' best work. It's fine, but it is not as enjoyable as the rest of the series. I think Lewis was trying too hard to make a point to the detriment of basic storytelling.
I can see where many things about this book are absolute genius. But I didn't personally find it enjoyable to read.

A loving Dad tucks his baby child in at night, plays games, and washes their hair at bathtime. The Dad tells his child how much they are loved and cherished. Every new day is an adventure of discovery as the Dad watches their child explore their little world.

I really like that the toddler in the book could be a girl or a boy, so it will appeal to all children! The text is very sweet as the Dad describes how much they love their little baby. It's a rhyming text, and the rhymes are good and the meter fits.

The illustrations are so cute! The Dad is really huge, and the baby is so tiny and little. The contrast makes it even cuter! Every page shows the Dad and baby doing some fun activity, playing superheroes, banging pots and pans, or just watching butterflies.

The board book pages are really thick and sturdy, making it perfect for little toddler hands.

Fantastic and imaginative! I loved it! I had me gasping in surprise, and laughing and crying and laughing some more.

Update: Reading this the second or third time is just as enjoyable and magical.

I love all the weird and wacky characters! The aunts are just hilarious, Minette is utterly sweet, and Fabio is such a brave little fellow.

I love all the magical creatures, the mermaids, and selkies, and other wild creatures. It's all so imaginative and interesting. The details make it all feel real and exciting.

The plot keeps your attention, and there is always something crazy going on. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, something totally unexpected surprises you.

The writing style is powerful and whimsical. It is concise, but uses vivid words and emotional scenes to draw the reader into the magic of the story.

This book has everything you could ever want to know about spies and secret codes. You can learn the history of spies and secret plans, and how to crack ciphers and codes. There are sections about famous spies, gadgets, secret fortresses, and classified information!

I love the design of this book! There are colorful photographs on every page, and the information is divided into boxes that make it easy to read all those factoids and snippets of history.

I especially liked the section about myths vs. facts, that debunks a lot of common misconceptions about secret agents and what they do. And there are cute things like how to come up with your own secret handshake to share with your friends, and how to create your own disguise.

There is an entire spread all about the secret passages and trapdoors under the Colosseum. And there are a few pages about secret societies like the Masons and the Illuminati. Ninja fans will like hearing about the secret identities of ninjas, and how people would set up traps and alarms to warn them if a ninja was coming for them. So many cool things in this book!

Professor Sherman is sick of teaching mathematics to unruly children in San Francisco, so he decides to take a year-long balloon ride around the world and never touch land in all that time. However, within days his balloon crashes near the mysterious island of Krakatoa, and he discovers the secrets of the island where a most unusual society is flourishing and fabulous diamonds are available to anyone.

This is such a fun and entertaining story! The plot has all these hilarious details all about the reception for Professor Sherman when he returns to San Francisco, his arrangements for his balloon house and how he planned his balloon trip, and the strange society that lives on Krakatoa and how they organize their days. Most of the narrative is explaining things, so there isn't a ton of action, but the descriptions are so wild and interesting that you never feel bored.

The writing style is really excellent, drawing the reader in with all these funny anecdotal episodes and details. The writing is vivid and concise. I really enjoyed it, and could barely put the book down!

I think one of the funniest things in the book is that Professor Sherman tries to hide that he is a math teacher from the Krakatoans. He doesn't want to be forced back into teaching after he has finally retired! As a teacher myself, I can understand. haha!

This book is such a delight to read. If you need something short and light-hearted and fun, this is the book for you!
