“The nature of the criminal justice system has changed. It is no longer primarily concerned with the prevention and punishment of crime, but rather with the management and control of the dispossessed.”
Quick Summary
The author argues that racial castes have not been eliminated in the United States, but rather it has been redesigned.
Final Thoughts
This was heavy, I recommend taking the time and reading the physical or ebook. But this is such an important book for everyone to read. The eye opening information even somethings I didn't think about is in this book.

“Sometimes something is so badly broken you cannot recreate its original shape at all. If you try, you create a deformed, imperfect image of what you’ve lost; you will always compare what your creation looks like with what it used to look like.”
Quick Summary
A memoir of the troubled history of the authors family.
Final Thoughts
This nonfiction is right up alley. The only thing stopping me from a 5 star review is I found myself being almost jumped around at times. I wanted to learn more about the author and about their family history but it wasn't organized in a way my brain could totally enjoy.

I just didn’t care about anyone in the book.
The synopsis had me so excited, and I went in knowing it was a short story. But …. I wanted and needed more from it.
I wanted a lead up with their relationship. This could have been a whole novella and I would have devoured it. It just lacked for me.

““I’ll come right out and say it,” mercy told them “strange noises, bad vibes, your mom and dad recently passed - your house is haunted and I’m not selling it until you deal with that””
How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix
QUICK SUMMARY 🖊️
Louise heads home after finding out her parents have died in an accident. She’s dreading this trip, especially having to deal with her brother who wants nothing more than to get rid of everything in their parents house and sell it ASAP. But it’s almost like the house doesn’t want to be sold.
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
I think this is my favourite book I’ve read so far by Grady Hendrix. With the creep factor amped up to 1000%. I did find myself getting mad at the main characters but the story tells itself in a way that you learn so much about them that you need to keep reading to find out more because they’re not what they seem at first glance.

“Fucking bastard, I'll stab you in the chest with this pencil.”
Battle Royale by Koushun Takami
Narrated by Mark Dacascos
Quick Summary
A junior high class is taken to a deserted island where they must fight to the death, until only one remains.
Final Thoughts
@curiously.katt put it simply. Battle Royale walks so The Hunger Games could run. I LOVED THIS.
But with that said, I wish I stuck with my gut and went with reading the actual book vs the audiobook. There is a lot happening and I found it hard to keep track, but also no ebook? RUDE!! Honestly I'll buy this physical book so I can read it and truly enjoy it. Although I think I'll watch the movie first.

“I’d like to think that we’re the kind of friends who could meet up one day when we’re eighty and talk like we’d just seen each other yesterday.”
Ghost Camera by Darcy Coates
Narrated by Maren McGuire
Quick Summary
An old Polaroid camera was left abandoned in a lighthouse, where Jenine happened to find it. She doesn't think anything of it until she takes the first picture and something is... not right. There are people in the picture that shouldn't be there.
Final Thoughts
This has everything you need in a scary story, which is amazing since it's less than 200 pages. I love the idea of haunted objects even more than houses, just keep the objects away from me. I love when I feel like I can place the narrator to the characters in the book which was the case with this one.

“Some of the worst Mounties I have dealt with in terms of ability were former Officers of the Year.”
22 Murders: Investigating the Massacres, Cover-up and Obstacles to Justice in Nova Scotia by Paul Palango
Quick Summary
This expose brings light on the historical mistakes made by RCMP and the big ones that lead to the deaths of over 20 people in April 2020.
Final Thoughts
This was a tough read for me, it took me two months. A lot of the information in this book isn't news to me. This happened in my home province, and a friend of my husband lost people in horrible massacre. The pandemic was in its early months and we were all shocked to learn a shooter was on the loose and even more shocked to learn he had a fake RCMP car, which is a big reason for my fear of being pulled over by RCMP even today. Paula Palango is a retired editor and investigative reporter for the Globe and Mail. The research he put into this is so much more than just what happened in April 2020 but a more ind depth look at the RCMP and their shortcomings that a lot of people don't want to admit.

"No matter how he looked at it, they could only bring one of their friends. And the living had to take precedence over the dead."
Hunted by Darcy Coates
QUICK SUMMARY
When 22 year old Eileen goes missing after taking a solo hike, her family doesn't want to believe the worst. Then her camera is found five days later and once the film is developed no one can believe what they're seeing. It looks like a monster... but monsters don't exist... right?
FINAL THOUGHTS
If you've been around for any length of time you know how much I love my girl Darcy. That said I'm always honest even when I don't love her books. Which isn't the case with this one. OH MY GOD. This climbed very quick to one of the top favourite books for me. The fact I had no idea what was happening other than knowing people were in danger. Just please read it and then we can talk about it. Thanks!
