“I was twelve the first time I saw my dead father cross from the kitchen doorway to the hall that led back to the utility room.”
Mapping the Interior by Stephen Graham Jones
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
QUICK SUMMARY 🖊️
A twelve year old thinks he sees another person walking through his house at night, but the person he thinks he saw has been dead for years …
FINAL THOUGHTS
Oof this quick read is a hard hitter on grief, the choppy sentence structure adds to the POV of this twelve year old. The Indigenous history of the family adds to the tense thought of a loved one coming back in the afterlife. Overall a great short novella and easy to fly through in one sitting.

What Remains of Teague House by Stacy Johns

QUICK SUMMARY 🖊️
Siblings return to their family home to bury their mother but end up uncovering something forgotten from their dark past.
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
Thank you @PoisonedPenPress and @NetGalley for this copy of #WhatRemainsOfTeagueHouse !
This felt slow and fast at the same time. I was convinced I knew exactly what was happening the entire time, which I absolutely did not and I was left with my jaw ON THE FLOOR. Family secrets and difficult dynamics made this all the more enjoyable!

“Beauty can captivate us individually, but in overwhelming swarms, it becomes eerie…because it holds such power, you know? Beauty, I mean.”
Their Monstrous Hears by Yigit Turhan

QUICK LOOK 👀
Riccardo returns to Milan after his grandmothers death to settle her estate, but he find people acting strangely and then discovers what seems to be his grandmother biography she had written and hid, except what’s on the pages is stranger than fiction.
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
The premise of this book is there, the story is there but I felt like I would get sucked in only to get bored. I can’t even put my finger on what I’m was missing from the story at the same time giving me loose skeleton key vibes. I wanted more from the story but less at the same time if that makes sense?

The Unworthy by Augustina Bazterrica

QUICK LOOK 👀
(From @thestorygraph)
In the House of the Sacred Sisterhood, the unworthy live in fear of the Superior Sister's whip. Seething with resentment, they plot against each other and await who will ascend to the level of the Enlightened - and who will suffer the next exemplary punishment. Risking her life, one of the unworthy keeps a diary in secret. Slowly, memories surface from a time before the world collapsed, before the Sacred Sisterhood became the only refuge. Then Lucía arrives. She, too, is unworthy - but she is different. And her arrival brings a single spark of hope to a world of darkness.
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
I’ve had to sit on this book for a while to attempt to put my thoughts together. I still don’t know if I have gathered them. This was one I was looking forward to, as I LOVED Tender is the Flesh however this one left me feeling like I was missing something. I almost wished it was longer with more in-depth of both timelines.

“When I first started writing these letters they were for myself. They were a way to try to keep who I really am alive.”
The Woman in the Cabin by Becca Day
QUICK LOOK 👀
Mary has one role, to be the perfect wife. Living in a secluded cabin with nothing but her husband, until she noticed her first wrinkles and that’s when her husband mood starts to turn.
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
At first glance, this book gave Near The Bone vibes husband and wife in a secluded cabin. It quickly turned and just kept turning. When I thought nothing was going to shock me… I was WRONG.
Over all this was a great quick read of a thriller. Anyone who’s looking for a secluded martial thriller.

“It wasn’t made for love, the house.” “Any place is made for love,” she protested. “Not this place and not us. You look back two, three generations, as far as you can. You won’t find love. We are incapable of such a thing.”
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
QUICK LOOK 👀
Noemí, on her fathers orders, travels to the Mexican Countryside to visit her cousin after some concerning letters they had received.
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
This a definition of an atmospheric slow burn. The build up sets you up and gives you the perfect gothic setting. You need that build up to get where the author is going, it seems like the pacing was the thing that a lot of people are hung up on while looking through reviews.
The only thing I think I would have enjoyed more is more into the relationships of the characters it felt a little lacking for me.

Freedom doesn't come without a sacrifice.
Gothictown by Emily Carpenter
QUICK SUMMARY
Billie Hope moves with her family to Juliana, Georgia, after a tempting offer for a home and business grant. Despite the town's charm, she faces haunting dreams, marital strife, and overbearing influences from local elders, leading her to question the safety and permanence of their new life.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I could not put this book down. Small-town horror always has a grip on me. The historical features of this story make it all the more worrisome for the characters of this book. This take on a too-good-to-be-true offer post-pandemic and someone struggling to find herself and where she belongs in this world. The one thing that turned me off is the HP reference, just unnecessary.
“Happy people are just people who haven’t learned better yet.”
The Good House by Tananarive Due
QUICK SUMMARY 🖊️
Angela Toussaint hasn’t been to the home she grew up in since the accident. But in order to face her past and ensure her future. She needs to face demons of her and her ancestors past.
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
The synopsis of this book had me wanting to love it. After DNFing twice and almost this last time before powering through, I found that this book drug on and with amount that was going on it the book I couldn’t keep my focus. Everything just ended up being a disappointment as a whole.

Daughters of Legianne by H.S. Sullivan (@themothermermaid)
QUICK RUNDOWN 🖊️
A multigenerational family saga entwined with secrets, lies and magic.
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
Okay, I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel at first with this one. But the more I got into the book the deeper the claws of this book dove into me. The magical world, the complex relationships and the entire story keeps you wanting more right until the bitter end … and then some.

This behind the scenes read was just not for me. I found myself needing to push through, it was too wordy for me and I couldn’t keep my interest.
