Okay, so I am an emotional wreck right now and at a complete loss for words. Perhaps not the best moment to try to write a review (also, it’s the middle of the night). After a few futile attempts at trying to express myself, this is the best I could come up with, sorry guys... Obviously, I wasn’t born to be a writer. Thankfully Markus Zusak was! This is one of the most beautifully written stories I’ve ever read.
Regarding my current mental state:
I cried a few times while reading this book - it doesn’t take much to make me cry, sad commercials for instance - but the last twenty pages or so were an utter tearfest. I’ll get over it in a couple of days.

Warning: ranty review full of spoilers ahead.
Okay so here’s the thing... I really like Chaol Westfall. Like, he was my favourite character. Emphasis on was. Do I think he should’ve told Aelin about Nehemia? Yes. Do I think she should hold the fact that he didn’t against him for the rest of his life? No! Jesus, that girl knows how to keep a grudge... When these two meet again after Aelin returns from Wendlyn, it’s like they’ve never even been in love with each other at all. At the end of Crown of Midnight they were not on bad terms. Then, when Aelin comes back, she suddenly hates him to the bone. What happened?! What stumps me the most is how Aelin is acting like an utter hypocrite all of the time. For instance: she blames Chaol for “fleeing” the castle and leaving Dorian behind, then claims she would never have left him. Apparently nobody but Aelin is allowed to make mistakes. Chaol is only human! I was just really pissed of with Aelin for the better part of the first half of the book...
Then, the Rowan-Aelin relationship... The only good thing I can say about it is that the chapters from Rowan’s POV show he also has a soft side (*gasp!*). The whole thing feels forced to me to be honest. I was really rooting for their relationship to stay platonic. They were great as friends! Why can’t a male and female character just be friends, without getting romantically involved? Apparently it’s an “unpopular opinion”, but I totally shipped Chaol and Aelin. How Aelin comes to just completely despise him is a mystery to me. It feels like she just upgraded from “mere human” Chaol to “mighty immortal fae prince” Rowan. When did she just stop loving Choal and fell in love with Rowan? Also, why is every male character obsessed with Aelin? Rowan was being so possessive about Aelin and acting like a jealous boyfriend. Even towards Aedion who, let me remind you, is her COUSIN! Also, that scene where Rowan is washing Aelin’s hair might be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read... Cringelevel: through the roof.
After SJM practically ruined Chaol’s arc for me (I don't see an interesting future for him with Nesryn, which is not her fault, her character was just underdeveloped and in my opinion only created as a rebound for Chaol after Aelin), Manon might be my newfound favourite character. I liked her better than Aelin in this book, even though she’s a bloodthirsty witch with iron claws and teeth. I really enjoyed the chapters from her and Elide’s POV. There’s this beautiful scene where she’s talking to Asterin about love and asking her what it feels like. Now that’s what I call character growth!
Even though Dorians chapters broke my heart

When I started this book I was honestly preparing myself for a disappointment (don’t ask me why, I’m pessimistic like that
Sometimes I get the impression or feeling (I don’t know what it is) that most YA-readers really like both Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Leah on the Offbeat, but kind of forget about this one? Or maybe it’s just not mentioned as much as the other two. I might be wrong, I don’t know
