Far Sector took me a LONG time to read, not because it's bad, it's just pretty heavy and I wanted to take in this gorgeous art.
Let's talk about the strongest part. The art, it is fantastic, and well worth to read for that alone. The style, look, battles, and scenery all look amazing here. One of the best looking comics I've seen in a very long time.
The story itself is solid even if the pacing is a bit wonky. At times I felt my attention drifting, especially in the middle part of the story. However, I really like Jo, our main hero, and her badass way. She's funny, likeable, human, and a hero I can look up to. Her choices are tough but it's her determination to keep people save I really enjoyed.
This is a nice surprise for me because people who write novels sometimes aren't always great. But overall this was really solid and a nice surprise hit for DC this year.
A 4 out of 5.

Update: years later I still love this story. The first issue was really the prologue, and it's still weirdly paced because it's by multiple writers. However, the main story is STILL so good. The transformation of the lizard is so wonderful. I actually like this even more upon re-reading it. Check out my full video below to get a more in-depth look at this book/arc -

The first issue was a little meh but the rest were stunning. I'm not much into dark grim tales for our hero Spider-man, but this one felt earned. The lizard is a tragic character, and this time we actually have TRUE consequences to his actions. To a person who pushed the wrong buttons and resulted in a great loss. The ending being bitter sweet worked real well too, and not ending on a silly note really made this the ONLY gauntlet story worth reading besides Rhino. Goodjob Zeb!

A overdramatic yet engrossing tale of a Woman who lost everything and decides to get answers.
Nao when a little kid lived in a mansion of sorts where her mother served very rich people. One day her mother is accused of killing the head master of the place and Nao basically has to live her life as a Orphan. It's a sad and fucked up tale but we have a time skip and Nao knows her mother was innocent and decides to return to the place that ruin her life to get revenge.
It's dark, twisted, every character has alternative motives, and everyone has a "plan". Who killed who is intriguing enough and the characters are interesting. I'd say the idea of going back for revenge seems too foolish and we know bad things will happen to Nao but I am intrigued where we'll go from here.

Another Great volume, Thompson and Elene Casagrande are KILLING it.
This takes place right after volume 1 left off. We now have Black widow and White Widow teaming up and starting their own operation. But in doing so they might have to recruit a new girl but not by choice, the people who are after her force the Widows hand. Making for a team built out of desperation but somehow works.
This is both interesting and fun. So many cool elements, great character moments and dialogue, and a hack of a team up. We even have a surprise guest at the end who I really hope makes another appearance down the line. While the plot itself isn't super deep it's the character moments and amazing art that really help boost this title. A 4 out of 5.

Whoa this was a pretty great first issue. Great art, solid dialogue, a very intriguing plot that's got me thinking we're going to get into some dark shit. This series is also pretty funny (The meme of the guy talking to the girl in a bar? Priceless) Overall, very solid first issue.
Carnage: Black, WhiteBlood Treasury Edition
Benjamin Percy, Kyle Hotz, Ken Lashley, Marco Checchetto, Tini Howard, Chip Zdarsky, Donny Cates, Sara Pichelli
Super great art, so/so story.
Most of these stories are kind of one dimensional or flat. Mostly carnage killing and nothing really exciting. Few try more like Dan Slott's sinister plotting of Carnage driving a man to kill himself, or Donny Cates farewell to his carnage, or even one of carnage keeping Spidy tied up. All good stuff but the rest were kind of forgettable.
Amazing art though in the Library edition, well worth it for that alone.

Thanksgiving and we know Jeff is a hungry boy! Too cute.
This was a really nice surprise.
Very much in the quick and quirky feel of Buffy, we have our main character Zadie who is just trying to survive high school. Soon into the story we find out her brother is in a coma and she's just trying to deal with her life and family. Soon she begins to see shadows who try to hunt and get her, but her brother, who is now a shadow comes to her aid. She then has to figure out what to do next.
This feels like a TV show in the best possible way. Quick and fun dialogue, lots of cool moments with the shadows, art really solid. Nothing is really amazing or mindblowing. No heavy twist that change the narrative. But some cool moments at the end and one that got me excited for more, I'd for sure recommend Shadecraft as a comic to check out this year.
