A Bloody end to a family of drug dealers.
The thing is, when you begin to get involved with people there's always a angle. Especially with someone trying to break into the family. And that's where our heroes (if you can call them that) fucked up and from the inside everything goes sour. This kill or be killed like ending will leave most if not all the characters dead and for what? TO see the dead? Well guess what...that's where you're all heading.
This was extremely entertaining. The bloody kills and awesome character moments really worked well. The art was also easy to follow here and lead for some great set pieces. It did feel a bit rushed though at times, and I couldn't help but feel this could have been even better as a bit more slow burn. But overall still extremely entertaining murder gang drama story. A 4 out of 5.

Okay so I'm going to get a bit personal on here.
A few years back my wife miscarriage with our first child. It was probably one of the biggest challenges in our lives. Both together and dealing with our own loss. I shut myself away from her and just about everyone, and she went into depression. It took a long time, and many other stumbles, before we got back up. But it was one of the hardest points in our lives.
Waves is about two ladies who finally get pregnant and are ready to create the family they've been waiting for. But soon into the story they go through complications. It's not a secret that they lose the child, it's on the description. It's all about the journey of recovery. This book focuses on the trip back from the traumatizing events of both ladies, but mostly the one who had carried the child.
It's the brutal and honest look into it all that made me read this all in one go in twenty minutes. The complications at birth, or even before, ring too true to me. Even some of the things in our recent birth, where we did have our child, came up with huge complications (9 pound baby will do that, my poor little wife =O) but it's the loss and the fight to return to "normal" is the most powerful. I could relate to a lot of it.
With the art I really loved the idea of going from color to all black and white, and as life returned to normal (as normal as you can be) the color returned to certain items and people. It was dealing with depression in a way I haven't seen and I loved it.
The only negative is sometimes the dialogue seems a little off, mostly between the married couple, but it wasn't enough to bother me much. This is a must read, even if can't relate, I believe you can appreciate the honesty coming from this storyteller. A 4.5-5 out of 5.

Outer Darkness is like taking Star Trek, Aliens, and a bunch of insane backstabbing characters, and mix it all together with a lot of humor. The results? Pretty freaking great.
This is my first Layman book and I have to say, it was really enjoyable. Over the top for sure with a crew of crazy fucks on a mission to retrieve something. Our main hero is not a likable captain but he won't fail his mission. The crew is absurd, with so many clashing personalities you have to wonder how they survive past day 1. Together they must go forward in their quest but when they crash land, things start going wrong fast.
A bloody, humorous, crazy balls to the wall action sci-fi, adventure. I really was taken by surprise of how fucked up and gory some deaths here were. But also the pacing is near perfect with plenty of great action moments and laugh out loud moments. It did take me a bit to get used to the flow and characters so the first two issues were jarring but once I did, pure delight. A 4 out of 5.

Maybe I've had to read these stories from the past to enjoy this but I found it pretty dull. Some decent dialogue and funny moments but nothing clicked for me and I mostly got bored around half way through. The last half was tough to get through. Guess not for me.
So thanks to DC Universe I can pretty much read any DC comic made in the last 50 years. And right after I read Outer Darkness (and reallllllly enjoyed it) I decided to give Layman's Detective Comics a chance.
As you can see this story didn't work much for me.
It basically is a two parter. The first dealing with Batman taking out some goons on a night patrol and then Penguin taking credit. Right after that we're introduced to Poison Ivy's scheme and a weird Clayface plot with her. Then we jump into Emperor Penguin. A new Penguin like figure who schemes and tries to control everything. So Basically he's like regular Penguin but skinnier and taller and sexier...
Overall, nothing was really interesting. The art is decent enough. Layman's dialogue is fine. But nothing in the storyline is all that interesting. Not the villains, not Batman, and not any supporting characters. There was one scene with Damien and Bruce that I got a few chuckles and...that was it. Like most of New 52 Detective run, this doesn't do much. I couldn't even finish Volume 1, and I disliked Francis Manapul Flash so I haven't given his arc a chance (Anyone? Any good?) But I'll give Peter's two short volumes a chance but not expecting much. Unlike Rebirth, Detective comics in the New 52 never did much.

Batman: Detective Comics, Volume 8: Blood of Heroes
Peter J. Tomasi, Brian Buccellato, Francis Manapul
Couldn't even finish...
Well this was a pure delight. And by that I mean plenty more alien hunting, heads exploding, and backstabbing to be had.
This one really goes at it with the backstabbing as it seems every crew mate is looking to fuck over another. On top of that we get a new mission but we all know that's not going to go as planned. With stealing of ships, new alien race, multiple people dying off, and plenty of dark horrible shit incoming, I need more of this comic as soon as possible. The art is great, the dialogue is funny as hell, and the pacing is near perfect. This was fantastic if I'm being honest. A 4.5 out of .5

Holy shit bonkers volume.
First Half is all about Nate and PIa reuniting. We knew it would happen so no spoilers there. However, what happened to Nate? Oh he became something special alright. Then we get to my dude Grant who's been in lockup too long. Finally free it's time to save his family but when monsters from all different worlds start invading is it too late to save anyone?
This is the most batshit insane final two issues but works so well to give a boost the series needed. While the first half was good I didn't love it. But 2nd half is fucking nuts and I wanted it to go on forever. Grant being back in focus helps to, and Pia as a hero is badass as well as Nate's new powers. Overall, great stuff and easy to jump back in even years later. Can't wait to fully finish this series now and maybe even re-read it down the line.

This Black Science volume slowed down a bit at parts but still insane crazy shit is happening.
This chapter feels almost like the final part. Everything from every single story comes to a head here. All the characters ever in this series return and it's a huge blowout style war. Plenty of great moments for Nate, Pia, and even Grant. Of course more deaths occur, alot more, and a major twist at the end puts us in a "So what now?" situation cliffhanger.
I really dug a lot of this volume. I think my favorite part was actually the very start and end since it help reflect on things. I also think the art still is amazing with some fight scenes that are freaking mindblowing. There are some pacing issues as some things slow down to a halt on big action moments that should have been in another part. But overall this series is not running out of steam yet as we head into the final two volumes. A 4 out of 5.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Vol. 1
Frazer Irving, Dan Abnett, Joshua Hale Fialkov, Keith Giffen, Philip Tan, Rafael Kayanan, James Robinson, Pop Mhan
Quick and short review. Never read/watched much of He-man growing up. Came in with super low expectations. Came out enjoying it for most part. Cute little adventure, plenty of fighting, some good humor, and a decent set up for the future. A 3 out of 5.
