Another volume of season 9, another pretty good but not great volume.
Buffy is now teamed up with her near vamp-kill squad but things might not go in her favor when a old friend comes to visit. On top of that we have Dawn dealing with being sick and Xander losing his cool far too often which leads to some terrible choices. We then have our new vampire slayer trying to prove himself but will he get in over his head? Let's find out right now!
Good: The pacing is pretty well done. Never boring, flows good, and we have all our characters shine for moments here and there. The heating up to the finale is working well as Buffy is dealing with a nervous and broken Xander. The stakes grow a little more too making it a more interesting volume.
Bad: The art and fights are still pretty dull for the most part. The new slayer loses a lot of interest here compared to his opening in the last volume.
Overall, good, like this whole season, I just wished I could give it higher. Either way, a 3 out of 5.

Who knew Dragon Ball Super was so fun?
This continues the tournament that started in the last volume. Goku is up against the Frieza look alike but things might not go as well as he wants. Vegeta and Picollo even get a chance to showcase their skills, and some emotional growth for Vegeta himself. The end of the tournament is both fun and exciting and reminds me SO much of Dragon Ball I love it. Then we begin a new arc with Future Trunks! This brings in a new villain, Black Goku, but will our heroes be able to stop him? We'll find out next volume!
Good: The tournament saga is so fun. Goofy moments are all around, especially one with goku meeting the creator of all. I also loved the hell out of trunks meeting future trunks. These moments will make you Lol. We also get to see Trunks grow into a new character and strengths we never thought possible, it's pretty great.
Bad: The tournament could be longer, I want more. And the rules seem odd but it does lead up to something interesting moments.
Overall, super damn fun. Dragon Ball Super has been fun from the getgo and it's only getting better. A 4 out of 5.

It's been awhile since I enjoyed a Power Ranger volume as much as this one.
This has the Rangers working with Grace to try and save the world. It's an extension of the last volume but this time we have a lot more happening. Grace is hiding a lot of dark secrets. Zordon has returned. We have Jason questioning his leadership abilities to the point of making some big decisions. There's some awesome fights including a 9 headed cat monster. So basically it's one big moving storyline with doom above all our favorite rangers.
Good: The fights are great and the pacing is perfect. Fast paced but enough slowdown to give us a breather. I also thought the choices here on the rangers, and their internal strugges was well displayed. I think the ending is building up to some big revelations that I can't wait to see played out as well.
Bad: I thought the man behind the door was kind of obvious and the last thing was stupid by a certain character.
Overall, great stuff. Really fast paced and fun, what power rangers should be. I can't wait to keep reading! A 4 out of 5.

Spider-man goes back in time to try to change things, though it won't effect his time, so he has more freedom. Does it work?
With Peter, his sister, and JJ all returning to the past they all have some stuff to discover. Peter wants to teach his younger self how to figure out life a little better. So together they take out baddies. Peter's sister is on the hunt to find out about her past and to see who she really is. JJ is trying to convince his old ass self to be a better person, but of course that doesn't go right. This all leads to some interesting scenarios.
Good: Watching a young Peter and older Peter working together is actually really fun. Watching JJ talk to his old self, how he tries to convince him, is wonderful character growth. I also enjoyed the Goblin moment and you can see how that dude is and always will be Spider-man's greatest foe.
Bad: The sister plotline feels rushed and not very interesting. The stakes are low because we know none of this will matter to the main heroes.
Overall, a fun adventure with some really heartfelt moments. Chip obviously loves writing Spider-man and he does a good job. The stories themselves haven't been special but least his Peter is interesting. A 3-3.5 out of 5.

Pretty fun volume. Over the top as always, super stylish, storyline itself a bit hard to follow. We have a Twlight hunt but when these characters come to light, we're expected to be surprised or shock, but most times I'm just like "Who is that?" Maybe I'm just not getting invested in the world like I should. Still fun though, with some amazing fight scenes.
So years ago I tried this series and didn't like it at all. Now that I read a lot more Brian Wood stuff and enjoyed a lot of it I decided to try this series again. Is it good? Well...
Matty Roth, our main hero, is stuck in a battleground. On his first mission as a intern he enters the city only for most of his crew, well all of it, to be killed. No spoilers, this happens in the first 15 pages, and the rest of the story is him remaining in the city trying to be a journalist. Through the various next few issues they are mostly standalone type stories that he covers and range between political intrigue or more personal issues for our main character.
Good: I appreciate the art here, everything is easy to follow, and it works real well to give a different atmosphere. Despite dialogue or wordy script it's still really intriguing and interesting throughout for the most part. Matty is a normal dude stuck in a shitty situation and so it makes for a solid story if nothing else.
Bad: The dialogue could be a bit over the top and every single person really loves the word "fucking" which, so do I, but damn...every character? No way. Also, the way the story progresses I don't feel the sense of urgency throughout despite them being in a warzone. Like, something is missing, I can't quite put my finger on it.
Overall, it's good, better than what I previous thought, but didn't get attached to any characters yet. I'll see how it progresses as I read more. A 3 out of 5.

I really like Kurt Busiek, and love some of his stories (Superman: Secret Indentity) but this series just isn't hooking me.
So we have a bunch of stories of different people all relating to superhero times. One guy is an actor trying to be a hero, and starts being heroic, only to realize real super villains can end that quick. We have another guy who's a bell clerk for a hotel for superheroes. So on and on. Basically mundane storylines of regular people interacting with heroes. Which is the point of the series but this one just doesn't click with me.
Good: The art as always is really solid. Kurt has a real knack for giving us real dialogue. You have the cheesy superhero feel at times but besides that, everyone talks like they're actual people, which is nice. I also think it's easy to jump around each story since they all only loosely relate.
Bad: I don't get attached. I really want to love a character, or characters, but it's hard to really do that when it's pretty much on the outside looking in at all times. None of the heroes or villains are memorable and trying to capture the essence of superhero stories I think that's important.
Overall, another good volume, but not great. I dunno if I'll continue this one because I don't like giving it just a decent rating while I think others would love it. I might try the next arc just because it looks like it has a overarching story, but we shall see. A 3 out of 5.

Another good, but could be great, superman story.
The start is Lois and Clark talking about their date night. Of course that can never go well as Clark is swamped with reports to do. Once he begins though it unravels that a dark force is coming to end him and the world. Before that though another creature pops up, similar to Doomsday but actually has a sad backstory that made him this way.
Good: I love the stuff with Lois and Clark. It's heartfelt, cute, and well told. It makes you root for them. You also feel for Clark, a normal dude, with amazing abilities, just trying to do the right thing. The art is solid and the fights are crazy cool at times.
Bad: The storyline itself is a bit overstuffed and then feels rushed, not getting the organic feel of a epic that I think Busiek is trying to tell. Also, the major "villain" playing them all is kind of a goofy.

Another great volume, what a surprise!
X-Factor is everything I want in a series. Noir, crime drama, investigations, with Mutants, and lol moments scattered throughout. This time we have Val and her brother coming to the X-Factor investigations to find out what happened to Sue, Invisible Woman. When Jamie and the crew go to talk to Mr. Fantastic they are right away thrown off balance. Something is not right here, there is EVIL around, and now the crew has to figure out how to save Sue and even the kids at the same time by traveling to new dimensions!
Good: The humor is spot on, so damn good, and so human-like that I can't help but love it. The art is also pretty good here, and consistent, which is nice. The storyline is easy to follow despite dimension jumping (thank god) and I also thought the fights were pretty epic. Monet grows as a character even more, and this series juggles so many storylines a issue really well it's amazing.
Bad: The fantastic four feel a little out of character. Val is pretty good but everyone else seems a little different, but that's pretty much it.
Overall, another fantastic volume (no pun intended). It's light at times but hits on heavy themes, which I love, and it's also really well told. I see now why Peter David is held to such a degree, he knocked it out of the park with this series to remain this fun this long. A 4 out of 5.

The end of season 9! And it ends...pretty good!
So buffy and willow are backstabbed pretty bad by their bestie, Xander. In doing so it all comes down to trying to restore the magic to the world so that way Dawn doesn't disappear. In doing so Buffy comes head to head with a slayer who becomes more than she could handle, Willow might be giving birth to magic once more, and Xander tries his best to get redemption. How will it all end?
Good: The art still stays pretty good. I think the pacing was well done. Felt like a rush of a season final with huge stakes. With Buffy, never know if a main hero might die so it's there. The big moments count and we do lose and gain new plotlines.
Bad: The rush of the season final ends it with new status quo that feels a bit safe. Also, last issue feels out of place and more of a middle of the season episodes.
Overall, good but not great, just like all of season 9. Least not terrible, that's always a plus. A 3 out of 5.
