Every single time I open a Grant Morrison comic I fear for the worst. So, when it's good, I'm fucking HAPPY. Luckily, like his Batman and Robin or We3 comic, Morrison's New X-men starts off with a bang.
So what's this about? Well after the successful X-Men movie they decided the X-Men comics needed a revamp. Don't blame them at all. Who better than the guy who fixed Justice League? So we take out all the extra X-Men and focus on a few, mostly the originals, or more famous ones. Got Beast, Jean, Cyclops, Wolverine, and more. But it focuses on them so much that each encounter feels fresh. You also have Xavier as a key role and something major happens with a long lose sibling. Oh, and like the back of the book states, millions of mutants die. Talk about a "oh shit" start.
Good: Really dug all the interactions. Wolverine is both funny and charming here. I thought the fights were great, gritty, and brutal. The twist and turns keep coming and you feel like people can ACTUALLY die. I also thought the story, despite getting a bit bizarre closer to the end, is still really interesting.
Bad: The art. I know it's unique. I Love Jupiter's Legacy. But damn, it's rough here. Some of the female characters look fucking horrendous. Also, towards the end gets a bit too weird and shifts to the bizarre Morrison side.
Overall this is great. Extremely entertaining, solid dialog, and good pacing. Grant, when good, is damn good, it's a shame he's usually fucking insane. This is worth reading though for sure. A 4 out of 5.

Doug must have watched Baby Driver and Drive before making this.
So we have AJ, main guy who just got out of prison. He's trying to fix up his life and try to live a by the books type of life after a crash put him in jail and his friend dead. In doing so he tries to get a loan from the bank but you know what's going to happen. A bank robbery! Not only do that take AJ and kidnap him to drive for them but somehow the mob boss of the city has his daughter in the bank at the same time so she comes with them too.
Good: It's a pretty unique and interesting art design. Like a cartoony noir adventure. I also thought AJ was a pretty interesting character and I like his relationship with his father and best friend. The story is also pretty solid pacing because it's never boring.
Bad: SUPER predictable. You can tell every twist. I thought showing the flashback of what happen to him in the crash was annoying. It was shown around 7-8 times and it didn't become impactful any of those times. The side characters and villains are one dimensional.
Overall this was a quick run read. For the art alone it's worth checking out. Like Plastic though, Doug doesn't seem to have a lot of emotional impact on his stories. Still, for a entertaining crime stories this could be a lot worse. A 3 out of 5.

This is "what if Ant-man was a giant asshole" the series. I mean it's hard to top a wife beater but this guy is something else.
So Hank Pym is of course working on his suit. He needs it be useful to help S.H.I.E.L.D. and we have two agents who we follow their storyline in the past while dealing with the current of one of them being Antman. After a good, decent guy, uses the armor to help people something happens and the asshole of the two, Eric, begins to use the suit. In the process he fucks over his friend and tells his friend's girlfriend he was cheating on her (he wasn't), he then tries to murder a good shield agent trying to stop him (or almost does) he then saves a woman on the streets and uses her for food money and then stays in her house without her permission and spies on her taking a shower. So yeah...this guy is a giant asshole for such a small little dude.
Good: I liked the zanny cartoony art. It fit well with the style the story was going for. Eric, despite being a dickhead, is interesting because he never changes into a "good" guy who redeems himself or anything like that. I also thought the style of going back and forth between mordern and past was good.
Bad: The side cast is really bad. Like a woman fucking her ex-boyfriends friend right after his death? What? And then the main enemy, is actually a good guy, but they make him out to be crazy when they didn't have to be.
Overall this is fun but dumb type of story. The Astonishing Ant-man series is better but for what this is, not too bad. A 2.5 out of 5 but I'll bump it to a 3.

This was okayish. I mean we knew the big red would be coming back but how was the question!
So weird shit begins happening. Kids getting murdered. Weird psychic occurrences begin. Then the X-Men decide to break into teams to find out what it is. When they begin to piece it together we learn the Phoenix has returned but so has Jean! However, with her back is she who she says she is? At the same time we get to see Jean mentally breaking down little by little. Going through various images or people in her life and fading away.
Good: I liked some moments with Jean and characters. Especially the Scott moment and the Logan moment. I also forgot how much I liked Jean and when she returned I wanted her back on the team. Also, this moves very quickly, so it's never boring.
Bad: The storyline itself feels forced in a lot of ways. We know Matthew Rosenberg is a GREAT writer, but he can only do so much with this storyline. I also thought the art was okay, some cool moments, but nothing special.
Overall this is okay. Can read it and enjoy it, especially for Jean fans, but it won't blow your mind. A 2.5 out of 5 but I'll hit it with a 3 because why not.

So this is the conclusion to The New York Four, but this is five, because it's the sequel, and there's one more main character...kind of. Kind of six actually now that I think about it. Anyhow....
It's basically builds upon the last book. Riley is now dating Frank who is still dating her sister. It's messy and wrong and we deal with that. We also get a little bit more story of the other 3 girls who all have their very own issues to deal with. Then we have Angie, who becomes a part of the story more (that's Riley's sister). Last but not least is this emo/tattoo girl who's a bum who occasionally gives the girls advice and hangs out with them.
Good: Riley's story with her sister is by far the best one and most interesting. The frank storyline gets a much needed conclusion. I also thought the twist with the pregnancy was out of left field but that's kind of what happens. The art also remains solid throughout once more.
Bad: The ending feels kind of up in the air. Which I guess slice of life stories are like that. However, too many loose ends with the other girls to get a satisfying ending.
This was good once more. This series isn't going to change anyone's life but enjoyable YA style story. I'll hit it with a 3 out of 5.

Goddamn it, I can't believe how much I'm digging Mighty Morphin Power Rangers...
So yeah, this is great. You have a little bit more backstory on a Zack which gives him a much needed boost in interest. You have a high rush pace of this Black Dragon creature who is just fucking up the rangers so quickly it's sad. This has a zoid battle, a huge fight with just power rangers, and of course a ending that leaves you going 'Whoa."
Good: Loved the interactions between the rangers. They have a few ups and downs like any group of friends but it works. The fights are high end fun and the art is freaking great. I also loved the ending which is something I've never seen.
Bad: The Rita plotline seems odd, as she isn't really doing much this time.
Overall a ton of fun. I really can't believe I'm invested in a power ranger story but I'm glad. A 4 out of 5.

This feels like a goodbye for sure to a series I never quite loved but least always read enough to enjoy it.
So Wolverine wants to go back in time. Wants to go back to his time so he can change things. Of course he asks every single hero he knows to help but everyone says no. So what does he do? He goes to a villain because, well that's how you gotta do things sometimes. Once he goes back in time he relieves some of the biggest moments in Logan's life, including the Phoenix fight and then of course a little before his family is murdered.
Good: It's a nice farewell. Reliving memories is always interesting and I loved the moment where he sees his family again. It's both sad and tragic and full circle for his character. Also him asking every hero for help was funny.
Bad: It feels like running through the motions. That the old man logan knows his place and is saying it's okay to live his life from now on the way he doesn't look back on the past. Been there done that.
Overall another decent, fun, but unremarkable volume. Sure, ten times better than volume 4 but still nothing special. A 2.5 out of 5. I'll hit it with a 3 though for the art.

The war is here and...it's okay?
So first we get the start of preparing for the war with boy blue. Then a super secret mission with our favorite spy. And then we have the war itself. This covers pretty much the start, middle, and end of the entire war.
Good: I liked the stuff with boy blue, the human moments with Bigsby, and the spy stuff. The rest?
Bad: Was kind of boring. The war didn't have any crazy fight scenes for me.
Overall this was a mehish volume. Probably one of the weaker ones so far.

This was probably the least interesting volume so far despite some big changes.
So in comes Aogiri, Touka's brother, and he's part of the 11th ward. This ward isn't playing, they want complete and utter control. So they come and take Ken. Of course no one is even a challenge for them and off they take away our young half ghoul. The rest of the book deals with Ken and the gang of ward 13 figuring out how to escape while Aogiri and the other evil Ward 11 talk about their next step in the take over.
Good: I enjoyed the fight between Aogiri and Touka. Shit was brutal and fast. The ending was also a nice twist and really fucked up. I also enjoyed the fighting styles and learning which one would win against which.
Bad: The slower pace made it slow down so much it got a bit boring at points. I figured they could have sped up the breakout and also the moment the good guys decide to take a stand.
Overall a solid volume, 3 out of 5, but it could have been better. But knowing what's coming I'm okay with it!

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I was reading all the current Avenger titles prior to this but...that's a lot, so screw that.
No Surrender is a basic plot. The gamemaster has taken the world. Then you come to realize there's two game masters. Old faces pop up, every single person that was a avenger at one time is probably in here, and the return of the hulk incoming. This is a gigantic event that eventually leads to Avengers returning to a single team title.
Good: I enjoyed a lot of the art, I thought it was all good. A lot of the issues have individual voices of a certain character and it works well. I thought a lot of the interactions were pretty fun too. The hulk's return is great and he's so vicious that it's pure fun.
Bad: The plot itself is silly and dumb. I thought the villains weren't really interesting and the whole gamemaster twist was meh. The middle has some heavy pacing issues.
Overall, this was a fun little series worth checking out just to set up the new Avenger's title by Aaron. But is it amazing? No. Hulk is pretty boss though.
