FCBD 2017: Secret Empire #1
Nick Spencer, Chip Zdarsky, Paulo Siqueira, Mark Brooks, Andrea Sorrentino
Man I loved the shit out of this. So it's broken into two parts. Secret Empire prelude basically and Spectacular Spider-man (written by someone other than Dan Slott, YAY!)
What I liked: The SE storyline is really shaping up to be special. I've been really getting sucked into the world of Hydra Captain America. It's both intriguing and crucial to our time and shows how fakeness and lies can spread like venom. I also really loved the surprise twist (even tho it was spoiled) that leaves me wanting to really dive into Secret Empires. I loved the shit out of the Spectacular Spider-man storyline too. One big bonus is Spider-man is FUNNY again. I was actually laughing while he was fighting the vulture. Also artwork was top notch for both.
What I didn't like: With him fighting the vulture it came off as a movie stunt. Put the bad guy from the movie into the comic. Seemed lame.
This is a really fun little free comic to get you hyped about two comics. It does that 100%. Can't wait for both of these.

Well the title does not lie...Magic is dead.
The story is very clearly shows magic is now gone from the world. After getting a little history on why these robot creatures are invading our world and taking away magic, we're shown how the rest of the world is effected. In just 6 pages they are able to display some horrible events including a child losing all her friends, people losing their powers, and another magician losing her powers and dying in a tank that she normally can escape quickly from. Then the rest is a fast paced volume of Strange trying his best to survive against these robot creatures with very little magic.
Good: I really love the art here. It's kind of messy but it fits the world so well. Everyone flows and moves so well it feels like a cartoon but grittier, and I love it. I also think the events leading up to all the magic gone was great and really horrifying at points. Strange using his survival skills was kickass too and something different.
Bad: The extra chapter at the end was boring. I didn't need to see what was happening to EVERY magic user the time magic was gone. It felt unneeded. Also, as much as sometimes I love Strange'd dialog, is massive talking monologue can drive me crazy. There's a point I want to be like "shut the fuck up".
I'ma go for a 3.5 out of 5. Very enjoyable and this series keeps getting better. Hope it ends on a high note!

Love reading this side by side to Hickman's avengers run. Hickman's is total comic book love. I mean it's deep, dark, you'll only really get it if you're deep into Marvel mythos, and it's wonderfully complex and well crafted. Bendis is highly entertaining, summer blockbuster type of avengers, and the perfect companion to the deeper story Hickman ran.
This volume tackles a unstoppable force coming down to wreck shit. From the skies comes a man on fire who basically makes him unstoppable. His powers are off the charts and he's able to take out Alpha Flight quickly and easily. Then the Avengers step up, but how much can they do? And what is this person? Thing?
Good: I liked the start. It's intense, scary, and very fast paced. The bickering between our heroes and quips make it highly entertaining and basically the blueprint for a lot of superhero movies now days. I also think the art is great for the most part.
Bad: The ending was a big let down for me. I thought it was handled and fixed up WAY to quickly. I also thought the sentry really didn't do much except being a convenient plot point to help in a lot of ways.
Overall highly entertaining but otherwise kind of shallow due to wrapping things up in 5 minutes. I think the conflict being longer and drawn out would have made a deeper impact. A 3 out of 5.

I kind of loved a lot of this haha. I'm confused by the lower ratings.
So second sight is about a guy who takes mushrooms and then can be in the eye of victims or killers. It's a double edged power because it can help lead the police to help solve crimes but the crimes already have to take place. So the story here is Ray Pilgrim is brought back into this world after opting out of it because of a killer called the Reaper who nearly drove him insane. His teenage daughter wants to solve a crime ring who abducts little kids and murders them. In doing so these people aren't playing games and begin to come after our heroes.
Good: I really enjoyed the art. I also thought the main character, Ray Pilgrim , and his daughter were both interesting. I thought the power was neat and I actually liked that the "bad" guys were pretty smart here, and that this didn't just have a happy ending.
Bad: I thought it rushed through some things, mostly two major deaths. It was really the pacing that kind of hurt this otherwise really interesting story.
I really dug Second Sight. I hope they keep up their quality here with this one and it made me want to check out more of David Hine's work! A 3.5 out of 5 but I'll bump it to a 4.

This was pretty dang fun!
So what do we have here? Our main hero Sara waking up for a coma. She still knows who she is and the power she has with the witchblade weapon. We are introduced to a detective named Patrick and together they begin to piece together who wants Sara killed. By the end our hero faces off against the church, well a cult church, but I like to think just church to make me smile. And then...well I won't spoil it but a big ass demon dragon comes to fight!
Good: The art is simple, nice, and clean. Sara and Patrick together are great, a lot of fun banter, and you actually feel the emotions in this one. I also thought the pacing was a perfect way of giving us humor, serious moments, and fights.
Bad: Well, it's safe. No one you expect to not die, dies, and people you expect to get hurt, do, and the plot is simple and easy. You've seen it in a 100 comics before. So playing it safe is really it's only weakness.
Saying it's a simple plot you've seen might sound bad but it's still tons of fun. I'ma go with a 3 out of 5 but I have a feeling this series will grow into something special.

Holy shit this was super goddamn fun. I'm finally a strange fan.
So Doctor Strange isn't having a very good week. In fact the magic is slowly coming back to earth but taking it's sweet time. In doing so every goddamn villain Strange has ever had decides to try to kill him. This week of hell is amazing as each villain gets to have the spotlight and try to kill the superior sorcerer. Hilarity is non-stop as these villains all hate him enough to fight each other to get a chance to kill Doctor Strange. Oh man, this shit is insane.
Good: The art is still some of my favorite. It's so smooth and flow so well in fights, the fights are fantastic too, and the humor...oh man this shit was funny as hell throughout. Less monologues in this one and a lot more funny banter and dialog. I also really enjoyed the ending as it sets up the final part of Jason's 4 part epic.
Bad: Some of the pacing is off in the middle and drags and all the bad guys talk too much but that's about it.
This is fantastic and fun and laugh out loud type stuff. I'll miss Jason's run but I have a good feeling about Donny's run next. But before that volume 4 here I come!

This is obviously not made for me. The art is great, but the story? Zombies, bad humor, over the top situations...yeah no.
This series still remains good but I'm starting to realize why I wait for tradebacks.
So this volume gives us three stories. One about Oz and Comedian, Batman and Rorschach, and then Mime and Marionette go out on a little trip to a bar and of course shit goes bad. So with all three stories going on in one go 30 page issue does it cover enough to make everyone come to life? Do we feel their stories?
Good: I really enjoy the Batman and Rorschach stuff. It's both funny and intriguing to find out what's happening. I also enjoy the argument on TV about to trust Batman or superheroes in general. Last but not least the art is still extremely impressive.
Bad: The Oz and Comedian stuff is way too short. I wasn't able to connect. The worst though was the Mime storyline. Just kind of boring and a lot of blood and gore for...I dunno...to show they are like Joker?
Overall this was a decent volume but it's starting to wear a bit thin. I think I'll enjoy this more if I read it in one big collection.

This was some twisted ass shit. No other way to say it.
So the story is about a man who gets a cape and then he can fly. Simple right? Well he had the cape when he was a kid, and the first time he flew, when he took it off he fell and nearly died. So growing up he wanted the cape back but his mother told him she threw it away. When he does find the cape again and starts flying he decides to show it off to his ex-girlfriend...and then the horror begins.
Good: The series is extremely fast paced. Never dull and the art gives it this gloomy feeling without feeling TOO dreadful. Also the deaths are extremely fucked up, very horror like, and the build up keeps getting worse and worse which gives it this death-like feeling throughout. Also the ending was satisfying which I can't always say for horror stories.
Bad: It felt a tad bit cut short and another issue to flush out the beginning probably would have helped. Also one death struck me wrong as I wondered if the cape also gave super strength or some shit.
Overall highly entertaining, very dark, and really fucked up. I'd go with a 3.5 but I'll bump it to a 4 because I was always intrigued throughout! Reading all of Joe Hill's short stories next!

I'm not even going to lie...Red Hood and the Outlaws is slowly becoming one of my favorite Rebirth titles.
So what's happening here? Last we saw our friend Bizarro was on death bed. The end is almost here for our favorite (not all there) hero. However, Lex saves him, in a rather touching scene where he thinks back to when he lost his Bizarro is Forever Evil crossover. Then out comes a SMART Bizarro. At first I was like "Nooooo! I like dumb Bizarro" but then it all fit somehow and we got a interesting Arc of Bizarro trying to alter the future while Artemis and Jason bond some more.
Good: The conversations between everyone is wonderful. They all feel so alive, so well crafted, and interesting. The fights are highly entertaining, and the art is some of my favorite around. By the end it keeps a very intriguing storyline going and something special coming. I also enjoyed the annual and anytime see Dick and Jason bond it's special.
Bad: The plot itself isn't all that original or interesting. That's really the only negative.
This series is always entertaining, always interesting, and always fun. Right now I'ma go with a 4.5 out of 5. I really am enjoying this series way more than I expected.
