I saw the movie before picking up the book. I loved the movie and the book differs quite a bit. Excellent read. Even though I knew the movie, this was one time where I could create a whole new vision of the character in my head. Great book. If you think you know it all from the movie, I recommend reading it. If you haven't seen the movie, read the book first. You don't need the movie to be entertained by this story.
I like Dan Brown's Robert Langdon stories because they're pure pulpy entertainment. There's not a lot of thinking required to enjoy The Lost Symbol, and sometimes I need that - like watching trash TV.
Just as in Angels & Demons and The Davinci Code, I often find myself three steps ahead of the characters in the story. It's both fun and frustrating at the same time. I suspect Mr. Brown does that on purpose because he knows it works. Despite my frustration, I keep reading.
The story takes place in Washington, DC. Just as in The Davinci Code, I liked reading about a place I'm familiar with and picturing the locations in my mind.
The antagonist in this story is similar to his other books. They all seem to be power-obsessed religious zealots with sick pain and body modification fetishes. I think it's time for a new character type after this one.
Dan Brown is the salty snack of modern fiction. You know it's bad for you, but you can't stop munching.

I'm a big admirer of Richard Branson and his business philosophy. I enjoyed this book because he doesn't lay out his philosophy on bullet points and lessons, rather, he tells stories.
At the same time, he goes into a little too much detail at times. When he describes his dealings with the Nigerian government, my eyes glazed over a bit. At this stage in my own business, it's hard to relate to the problems in replacing CEOs of various Virgin-branded businesses.
It does make for interesting reading at times. I also feel like when he attempts to share very personal thoughts from his journal, they come across as well-crafted publicity statements.
I learned a few things from reading this, but I also expected less Virgin marketing and more of Branson truly stripped bare.
