most classics seem to have a lot of useless filler due to being paid per chapter or some shit, but this book has 0 wasted pages
i liked it a lot more than i thought i would, i admit, i dont think i like cozy fantasy . and youre wondeirng why the hell i read this? well, ... cat. and also i got the book before i decided i may not like cozy fantasy. but this one is the best one ive read so far. its simple, but not in a bad way. and i like how it wasnt so... philosophical like all the other ones ive read has tried to be
although there are still a few things that were maybe filler.the side quest to the woods with the phoenix some of that fluff-possibly-philosophical stuff that was .. eh. and it was really strange that Tao didn’t care or do anything when she found out her homeland was dealing with a civil war. i mean, i know she doesnt feel too much a connection with shinara anymore, but id expect a bigger reaction to it lol
although there are still a few things that were maybe filler.
I think the story would have been more successful if the focus stayed on finding Mash’s daughter.

jules was the very annoying comedy relief character... every single thing she said was an attempt to be funny and it was . well very fuckin annoying. i dont think her character was serious for a second.at the end, i do not understand how jules and ell are both just ok. alma even says ell is going to bleed out and she cant stop it but when mia gets to them, theyre just ok??? that much blood loss and not even unconscious?
throughout this book, (disclaimer, this is probably a ME problem) i couldnt really tell the characters apart... and then mia gets her hair cut, so she looks like two other characters who also have the exact same style of short hair..

also a small thing, but how are you going to write a trans character buying and driving a tesla, owned by one of the most transphobic people... elon nazi musk (granted, this book was written before all that) literally disowns its children for being trans lol
the weird thing where london is rich as fuck and dahlia is not was strange. its hard to root for london to win 100k when they literally dont need it at all, i thought maybe their parents disowned them and they needed it, but they are only estranged from their father, would their mother not give them money to start the non profit? i just cant root for rich motherfuckers joining contests like this just to win more money, when its people who are one emergency away from living on the streets competing in it too that need the money more
the romance is of course lacking... the only way they like each other is through sex, every single time they see each other they just want to fuck, and at the end of the book its trying to convince me they actually love each other.
