I wanted to like this book but I just didn't research enough to fully comprehend things. It was really fascinating in some parts and a bit dull in others. I'm glad I read it though.
Really enjoyed this book, especially the beginning and ending. I wasn't as fond of the middle. There were some racial sterotyping that, while fairly typical in Moore's book, were a little grating. All in all, though, it was good.

The relationships between all the brothers and the other family members were so well written and developed. There was a great balance between plot and character. It was a fantastic book all around.

This was a great book about a very dark topic. I though it was very well written and I definitely want to learn more about the history of these places.

This was pretty fantastic. It hit all the right places and while I was confused for a large portion of the novel, the ending did a great job at wrapping things up and leaving ab impact. I kind of want to re-read it again and get a different kind of experience now.

Overall, this book was very middle of the road. I've read Recursion (which was so good!) and Dark Matter (which was a bit of a mess). Upgrade definitely straddles the middle. I personally like characters a lot and Crouch's books have never focused too heavily on characterization, which is fine I guess. However, considering the premise of the book and it's central argument, I think more characterization was needed, since I wasn't particularly convinced by main character. Also, women aren't written particularly well in his works in general and this novel is no exception.
All that said, I did enjoy the read and it was a great quick paced book that I had some fun with. The pacing of the book was spot on and I enjoyed the world building elements.

This was a good mix of autobiographical and information about forests and trees. I couldn't get into it as much as I would have liked, but it's a great piece of nature writing.

I read this for a class and really enjoyed it. So many of the stories and characters were complex and intriguing. I definitely want to read more from her.

There was a lot of intense plot things in this book. Some of it was well set up and other things not so much. It was definitely one of her better ones in the Austin Family Series.
