This is garbled English at best. Why do I keep finding these books?
There's probably a better way of describing this than "twee" but damned if I can find it. The romance is making me wince already. I am about 95% sure I know at least one of the "twists," and I don't even care enough to skim to find out if I'm right. I was excited about this book before I started.
Before and After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved Dog
DID NOT FINISH: 19%
Holy shit, this is fear-mongering as Hell.
As a rule of thumb, your puppy needs to meet at least a hundred different people during his first month at home. Not only is this easier to do than it might sound, it’s also lots of fun.
and also:
Regardless of breed, breeding, pedigree, and lineage, if your prospective puppy’s socialization and training programs are not well under way by eight weeks of age, he is already developmentally retarded.
and finally, this, repeated easily a dozen times in the 19% I've read:
Remember, it takes only a few days’ start to ruin an otherwise perfect puppy.
Like...my dude, this is not helpful advice for parents of a puppy. All this has done is convince me I should not have adopted my abandoned puppy, all dogs have horrible problems, and my beautiful Gwen, whom I raised from a puppy, had no right to turn out as well as she did. There is no actionable advice (maybe that's later but I'm nearly 20% in), just lots of "remember if the puppy didn't get trained before you got it it is ruined" and "everything you do has the potential of ruining your dog."
Another book I just can't care enough about to pick back up after the library return.
