I adored how fast paced and gripping this book was. Sally Hepworth did an amazing job at making things seemingly predictable enough that when the twist start unraveling they’re pleasant surprises.
This book is for those who love things that’s are interconnected and stories with an overall moral message.

I loved that this book plays into the stereotypical Dominican immigrant mother in ny, to then spin it on its head as we get to know Cara Romero more deeply.

In a way, Cara is the every woman of her community, yet Angie Cruz does not shy away from showing Cara’s individuality; what makes her the human that she is.

This book is character driven in that messy, slightly problematic way that most books usually written about (white) women in their 20s are. Which was refreshing and allowed humor to be a main character in the book as Cara could express things about herself that she mentioned she usually wouldn’t.

Cruz’s decision to make this book 12 sessions was fun at first but toward the end I think the ambitious style rushed the story.
The ending felt too fairytale for a story that was pretty grounded in the tragic parts of reality.

The commentary on women’s lives in DR, gentrification, intergenerational relations, sexuality and more were wonderful to read threw Cara’s POV. It was compelling and hilarious

Will try later but it’s cringing me out right now

The potential was sadly not met with this one.

Shout out to Emily Henry for putting pen to paper (fingers to keyboard?) in such a raw yet impactful way … once again.
At surface level this was a pretty simple story about a second chance romance in a friend group. But the insight it has about growing up, grieving those you’ve lost & letting go of the way things used to be, is really what makes this book shine.
It’s also about so many different types of relationships & how they develop over time can be hard to adjust to.
It was cathartic, thought provoking, and honestly, encouraging.

Linda Holmes has a beautiful way of describing things that are seemingly mundane yet in their own way the treasures of life.
However, the premise of this book felt a bit dragged out.

I put this down and never felt the need to pic it up!!
I love this duo and will read their future work but the actual plot of this one felt a bit undercooked. I couldn’t buy into reading about this married couple pretending they don’t know each other 😞

“I do not support the glamorization of murder but I do support the empowerment of women” in book form.
I am a shell of a person. I can tell loads of this was inspired by true war events and if you enjoy history you will love that. However, it does not shy away from detailing gruesome depictions - please read content warnings before reading.
Also, for a book about suffering, it had me laugh way more than I expected.
