I think I’d need to do a reread of Beloved to properly rate the books against each other, but truly this novel was a treat. I mean- yes- they’re plenty of intense themes and discussions over PTSD, racism, sexism, etc., but the main focus of friendship and independence stole my heart. I think this book may be difficult for a lot of people to discuss because Toni doesn’t make any character perfect, which is honesty at its finest because nobody is.
Toni does a lot of things in this story that make your jaw drop to the floor. For me it happened maybe 5 times. For a 170ish page book- THAT IS A LOT. I wish I could’ve read this in college or a classroom setting because the discussion would’ve been 1000/10!
My only critique is that I wish it could’ve been longer, so the relationship between Sula and Nel would be more fleshed out. Otherwise, an amazing read. Highly recommend.
