Closer to a 3.5. I think I didn't particularly like the love interest as a person. We keep getting told that he's not actually an asshole jock but he also never really.... has to learn any real lesson, things just kind of work out. The result was that I really almost hoped they didn't get together. Overall, still a very sweet and thoughtful book that has a lot to say about grief, but there were times when multiple characters didn't really face consequences for their actions and that bothered me.

Hey there are just so many trigger warnings that I wasn't prepared for. Please be aware that there is heavy discussion of sexual violence against a minor and the book paints a heavy picture of PTSD. This is not a criticism but I was unprepared.
So there are problems with this book, for sure. There's a little bit of a "white savior" thing going on (although the black woman ends up being just as much, if not more, of a hero than the white woman) and there are a few times when I don't really love the characterization. There are also moments of me just going "oh yeah a man totally wrote this" but overall I enjoyed it. I thought it had some interesting things to say and said them pretty well.

There is far too much happening in this novel. Like legitimately too many plot points and not enough interest in it.
