So this is more or less everything I don't like in Scifi in one big leap. It hard core was not for me, particularly the writing style and the world building. There are some cool ideas but a lot of it is info dumping and so much of it feels cobbled together. It's clearly trying to be a YA version of a Becky Chambers book but fails so spectacularly. I did not enjoy reading this which is really too bad because I want more YA SciFi Queer stories but between the poorly plotted story, the half-assed world building, and the characters that never felt fully real I just... couldn't.

This is what it says on the tin: Princess Diaries meets Crazy Rich Asians. I didn't not like it but oh boy does the lead character fit a lot of early 2000's YA book heroin tropes. It's not that it's a bad thing, necessarily, and overall I thought the book was fun with a few interesting things to say. It just wasn't my favorite.

I liked a lot of this book even if the plot was a little predictable. My biggest problem with it was how often I felt the lead was being a selfish asshole. I know that is something of the point but I never really felt like he outgrew it. I still really enjoyed it and I liked the love interest so damn much, I just want to squish em. In fact, with two exceptions, I liked the minor characters the most.
