The Fire Keeper is the sequel to The Storm Runner, following Zane Obispo on new adventures, this time out to save his dad from prison! It is based upon Mayan mythology and is a perfect fitting series coming from Rick Riordan Presents.
I thought the first book was lots of fun, and here we just expand on the world and characters we got to know in the first book. I think a lot of new and exciting things was brought to the table and I cannot wait for the next book. I especially love how Zane’s shorter leg and his cane is a sign of his godborn power and can make kids out there with canes feel just as awesome with him. More thoughts in my video review! 4/5 stars.

The Girl the Sea Gave Back is a companion/sequel novel to Sky in the Deep, it is a Viking inspired novel. This one follows Tova who was found by the Svells, they took her in but are scared of her because she is a Kyrr and can see the future in runes. We also follow the POV of Halvard, a chieftain in training. Soon war is brewing…
I personally found Sky in the Deep totally average, and the same goes for The Girl the Sea Gave Back. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. I’m not the biggest fan of Vikings, and the whole war story was very boring. It felt most of the time that the story didn’t really go anywhere, or if it did it was never shocking or surprising. The main characters are pretty bland, but I liked how the author connected this book to Sky in the Deep. If you liked Sky in the Deep, I’m sure you will enjoy this one though. 3/5 stars.

Frankly in Love is David Yoon’s debut novel and it follows Frank, who is a Korean-American in his last year of high school. He does start liking a white girl, and has to fake-date his Korean-American friend Joy so his parents won’t find out, but the story has so so sooooo much more than that. The promos you are seeing around now almost only covers the fake-dating trope.
Frankly in Love covers themes like race, racism, white privilege, romance, family, (I could go on) … it discusses and explores while being witty and cute at the same time. It brings forwards questions and thoughts that I could relate to (being Asian-Norwegian myself). It also brought forward tears in my eyes, because it was also sad and heartbreaking and beautiful. I really hope this book finds the right hands, it can bring so much joy and wisdom to people. The thing I liked the least about the book was the writing, and I still enjoyed the book a lot. It is not even a love story, which in the end doesn’t drive the story but is just a part of it like everything else. I found the book to be a whirlwind of things, and it was quite a journey. 4/5 stars.

The Shamer’s Daughter is being rereleased on the 10th of September with new covers, so this is a perfect change to pick up this wonderful series! I read this for the first time in 2010 and I remember loving them, it makes me happy that this can make more people pick up this great series. I have never read them in English before, and I think it is awesome that the author herself wrote them in English. If you have never heard about the series before it follows Dina who is the Shamer’s Daughter, that means she can look into people’s eyes and see what they are ashamed of. The first book follows her learning more about her powers, and her mother being hired to find out if this guy named Nico killed his family or not. Dina is throw into this as well, and the book also has dragons! I absolutely enjoyed coming back to this series and would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and cute fantasy. 4/5 stars.
