I originally found the perspective of the main character to be pretty annoying/grating. However, I feel like that was intentional and really added to the build-up of the story and fed into the impact of the ending. I just, it was so good. I cannot handle how much I love this series. Reading the 3rd book will be the final book as I read in chronological order. I am very excited to get into it and wrap up reading this series! I am 100% certain I will need to find more from Butler to read in the future. Wow. Just wow.

This book shocked and surprised me. I really did not know what I was getting myself into. I knew it would be darker and gritty. The summary I had heard did not really explain what this book was and so I found the ending chapter and afterward to be stunning as it put everything into a new context. At the middle of the book, I was thinking I'd be giving this a 3-star, but with the back half of the book, I now feel this will be a book I will keep thinking back on and might need to re-visit in the future.
This is a book that I wouldn't read or promote if the "author" was still alive. F. Scott locked his wife in their home multiple times, stole her writings, used her body, personality, and words verbatim to bring to life characters, became jealous whenever she was recognized for anything and was generally a nasty human. But put that all aside, as he is dead...
And I just love this book. You can clearly feel a woman's perspective and feelings in several parts (he and his wife literally documented that he stole good parts of this book from her journals) and the whole book just reads as a very thoughtful and wonderful piece considering what it means to live the American dream and what the fall out is of "making it". It is an American classic for a reason and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
