MYSTERIOUS.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

I really liked the atmosphere of this book. There’s a subtle haunting vibe woven throughout that makes the book feel perfectly eerie. I was intrigued from the first chapter. It hooks you and pulls you in to a mystery that needs solving. A murderer that needs found an absolution that needs given. For awhile the story kept my attention.

The middle lost me a little bit because I felt different scenes dragged out or felt repetitive. And while the snippet POV’s of the antagonist were there I’m not sure how helpful they were to the whole story. I think keeping the POV’s for Felton and Eliza would have smoothed out some plot bumps. There subtle romance was sweet and I’m glad the found each other and were able to learn to trust throughout the extenuating circumstances.

The chapters are longer but I enjoyed the fast pace switching of POV’s. There’s a nice level of heated action, and not knowing who’s going to survive. I thought the reveals were surprising and liked how everything wrapped up in the end.

- Historical Mystery

- Romance: kisses
- Violence: moderate
- Trigger/Content Warnings: multiple attempted murders, loss of loved ones, near death experiences, kidnapping, brief torture

 A NICE SWITCH.

I have never read this author before so I had no idea what I was getting into. I thought this was a quirky contemporary that had some added murder mystery dynamics that made for a good and quick read.

I absolutely loved the banter between the two main characters. It made me snicker multiple times. As someone who doesn’t love the one night stand trope I liked how this was approached for the book. It’s clever and on the lighter side too.

I wasn’t quite sure why there was a third POV in here and it kind of took me out of the story and didn’t feel necessary. And I was hoping for more romance rather than mystery. This was at least a fresh vibe for me and that made it an overall delight.

GREAT CONCLUSION.

This review won’t be terribly long because I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, but I am here to say this was much better than the Red Queen series (of which I DNF after the third book and raged when someone told me what happened in the fourth). THIS SERIES ENDS BETTER.

And for all my low romance lovers, this is a great series to pick up. There’s some, but it’s very much a sub plot and doesn’t overwhelm the big plot happenings. This had those high fantasy vibes while being a young adult aged (and appropriate) read.

I found the final moments to wrap up where things needed to be. I had some concerns about a certain pairing and thought that where the ended up made a lot of sense and felt satisfying.

Many will find these books slow, so I highly recommend the audio (I listened to all three of them) to make things move a little faster.

I DON’T KNOW.

I need to write this review, but also don’t know what to write. I enjoyed this, I did. But something was missing. I can’t quite put my finger on what. While not my least favorite of Abby Jimenez’s, I wouldn’t count it in my top reads of hers either.

Maybe something was off with the chemistry initially. It started off really funny and I liked the set-up, then I feel like I lost a bit of steam in trying to get through it. It might be my own personal past things that combined with small things happening in the book that made me a little flustered.

The romance was super sweet though. I adored Justin. That man was put through the ringer and kept showing up. I loved the way he loved. His friends, his family, Emma. He’s one of those good souls. I could have read this book entirely from his POV.

I feel like the unsung hero of this book was Maddy. She kind of got dragged threw the mud and I’m glad she found a HEA too because Maddy really deserved more.

This was a complicated read. I’m still an Abby Jimenez fan though.

DID ANYTHING HAPPEN?

I was hoping that this spin-off would reignite something in this series for me. Instead I listened to 25 hours of Murtagh not quite doing anything. It felt like an adventure quest video game. He’d mosey from one place to the other and complete a task before moving to the next without the true larger plot showing up until somewhere till the end.

I like Murtagh, I think there’s a lot of potential there for him. He’s that morally gray, misunderstood guy. I kept waiting to really FEEL, and that just never occurred.

For a very long book I feel like I don’t have much of a review to give. I feel super meh about the whole experience.

THE VIBES WERE THERE.

I am a fantasy reader with a penchant for world building alongside my romance. That’s the only place where this book lost me. I am confused by the fact that there were cars and guns? Not unheard of in fantasy, of course, but I felt like there were different pieces throughout the book where I just needed more explanation.

The storyline is good though. I thought the male POV had a very unique dynamic and I liked the crossing worlds aspects. There’s some good slow burn chemistry between the two leads that I steadily fell in love with. I enjoyed all of the action and the competition. I’m hopeful about where all of the open threads could go in the next book.

An enjoyable read and one I would recommend. It didn’t give me Fourth Wing or Serpents vibes (as mentioned in the summary) so I would be weary of going in thinking the book is along those lines or anything.

LOVED IT.

Goodness this was such a lovely book. I needed a read like this. I loved how this enemies/rivals to lovers was portrayed and thank heavens for dual POV. I loved getting to know both Graham and Anna. Slowly watching their realizations and misconceptions about each other were wrong and finding that long standing connection between them turn into love was all sorts of romantic.

I adored the banter and the tender moments woven throughout the story. This book was full of heat and the simmering tension had me begging for them to kiss already. I loved the longing glances and tiny touches.

What I loved all the more was that anytime I thought that things were going to turn in a direction I wouldn’t love, communication and care showed itself. I LOVE how the conflicts were handled. There’s arguments and trouble, but also forgiveness and appreciation. Megan Walker continues to be one of my favorite historical romance authors.

 IT’S OVER.

I thought that overall, this was a good conclusion to the series. This family is one of my favorites and I love all of their dynamics and the way they take care of each other. There’s such hope and tenderness in the Bergman family that soothe something in my soul every time.

The romance was better for me in the second half. I felt the chemistry was lacking a bit in the start and it took me awhile to love Viggo and Tallulah together. I enjoyed them as separate characters and I wish the lust aspect wasn’t so heavily leaned on. The themes of jumping into scary things and being open to new experiences and relationships was beautifully woven in. I loved the therapy conversations and how Viggo and Tallulah truly found each other.

THIS WAS SWEET.

I loooove marriage of convenience. And this was a very sweet one. I loved the age gap relationship between Colin and Rosalie. They had a good balance of push and pull as both had some things to work through and solve. And when they found that connection with each other it was heart melting.

There were many cute scenes of that brought lots of sunshine and wholesome goodness to the pages. It’s a low stakes, comfort kind of book. I love the modern royalty aspects. And I’m always here for all things forced proximity. I enjoyed the swoony scenes and small moments where the chemistry was heating up.

 I LIKED IT.

I thought this was a good conclusion. I didn’t have any over hyped expectations or anything. I was just looking for a young adult fantasy to listen to and this did the job.

I always love meddling gods and while this had some predictable turns, I still liked the story. The romance played out differently than the usual though and I liked seeing Damian and Rossana work together. There’s a great plot with small parts playing into the story from multiple angles. Some good cross roads and growth and I liked the side characters too.

I felt like this wrapped things up well, but maybe there’s more? I’m not sure, I thought this concluded things and left it at a good spot.
