 THIS BOOK.

Oh my gosh this book about took me out. It was an very hard book to read, and a very good book too. The eating disorders are a present theme throughout and are written in the rawest form. It pulled at every muscle in my soul and had me teary eyed at the gym finishing it.

I loved the romance. It also about broke me too. The struggle and push and pull between Ginny and Adrian was dramatic chaos in the best ways. I was anxiously waiting for them to find each other again and again and again.

There are so many hard hitting moments about not feeling good enough, the journey to finding your worth and being healthy too. I appreciate the reality of the roller coaster of a journey. Many things aren’t linear and this was balanced beautifully. Gosh I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary + Romance
- Language: moderate
- Romance: 2-3 brief open door
- Content Warnings: graphic depictions of multiple eating disorders, grief and depression

I think this ended up mostly being a me issue. I’m realizing I’m more hit/miss on cozy reads. I think this needed a bit oomph, just something else to break up the day to day monotony of Belle learning how to use her magic. I didn’t find it as charming as I believe it was inteded.

There’s nothing wrong with the writing. It accurately paints a picture of a cozy fall vibe. There’s a bookstore, quirky side characts and a little bit of self growth. I did enjoy seeing Belle finally stand up for herself in the end. I wish the little sub-plot of romance had a bit more time in the light too.

It’s got good bones and the core of the story is good. There’s a bit of a pick up towards the end when some truths and mysteries are solved. It stands well as a nice standalone for the fall.

- Romance: flirting
- Violence: low

THOUGHTS.

I think this was a good book overall and it does have its audience. I do think that the audience isn’t quite me. Some aspects didn’t work for me, but some did.

I liked most of the scenes involving the two main leads, Ami and Edmund. There’s a lot of moments for them to get to know each other and when a book only has one main kissing scene you want it to deliver and it does. I thought they had wonderful chemistry. I also thought the historical aspects were interesting too.

It is a standalone and wraps up most things well. There was one plot point that threw me off about closing part of the story, the rest was good though. The faith elements were fairly well woven in too. It is a more moderate theme throughout.

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: moderate
- Content Warnings: physical altercations, murder, weapons violence
medium-paced

If you’re looking for a book where the FMC truly is a villain and you don’t mind if there isn’t any romance, I definitely say give this a go. Not exactly my usual but I genuinely enjoyed this book. The writing style had this ease of reading quality that kept my attention and made this book move well.

My one little niggling thought is that I wish the FMC, Binsa, had at least one good relationship. Whether that was platonic, familial, or romantic. I felt like I was missing a strong side character. There were plenty of smaller characters but nobody that STOOD OUT.

The plot had a lot of political maneuvering and devious betrayals. This does lean towards a darker side of fantasy with some of the themes and content. I liked all of the machinations and that it didn’t feel long winded.

I am 100% curious how this will flow out through a trilogy and based off the wonderful cliffhanger ending, I am absolutely going to need some answers.

Overall audience notes:

- Language: low
- Romance: none
- Violence: high
- Content Warnings: loss of life (including young children), murder, attempted murder

 A GOOD CONTINUATION.

I’ve been wanting to see where this character’s story was going to go and I liked seeing his development! I also am purposely not naming him because he’s a part of the love triangle from the previous two books and the suspense is key!

I liked the romance. It had a lot of good swoon and conversations. I loved seeing both of the main characters grow and change and grasp what they wanted to do with life. It’s perfectly heated and I loved the tension.

I did struggle with suspending some belief about one of the main plot lines. It seemed a little farfetched in the end. And I don’t love a third act martyr situation.

OTHERWISE. I am still very much loving this series and can’t wait to continue.

This is one of those books that has altered my brain chemistry. It is one of the best books I’ve read this year. I feel like I won’t even do this review justice because of how phenomenal the entire book is.

I loved being back in this world and I loved getting to see my favorites from An Ember in the Ashes (highly recommend reading that series first!!). I loved all of the new characters. It’s a complex and diverse cast where this is not one weak point. Every single POV was engaging. I slowly devoured this because I wanted to savor it but also needed to know what was going to happen next.

And oh boy were there TWISTS. I was left staring into space multiple times while also flipping pages back and forth to make sure I had grasped what the heck just happened. Sabaa Tahir is an incredible writer and the wait for this book was worth it and more.

Also, ROMANCE. Good heavens it SENT ME. Every little lingering moment and touch and soft glance and heated exchange. It was an effortlessly created slow burn. I am obsessed.

There’s so many moments I would love to highlight that have engraved themselves on my soul. The deep, heart wrenching themes and the small pockets of joy. Handling what life has handed you with the strength to take the next step forward. This is one story that I will be thinking about for a long time.

Overall audience notes:
- NA Fantasy + Romance
- Language: low
- Romance: very vague open/fade to black

- Content Warnings: loss of life and war themes, torture and kidnapping, weapons of mass destruction

NEW FAVORITE.

This is easily my current favorite Kara Thomas book. I was hooked from this book from the beginning. It’s a complex story with some heavy themes and topics and wow did it hit me with a gut punch as the reveals started coming out.

I really liked the main character, Hadley. I enjoy a thriller book that has a character you don’t feel forced to hate. Hadley didn’t do everything right, but she did try and worked hard to find the truth.

It’s a short audiobook with another fast paced timeline. I love that Thomas writes short books because the story is not bogged down by side quests that don’t fulfill the full plot line. It’s easy to binge read and great for fall.

Overall audience notes:
- YA Mystery
- Language: low
- Romance: none
- Violence: moderate
- Content Warnings: gang rape, cheating (in school and on people), seizure, hit and run (resulting in a death), domestic violence, hazing, underage drinking

Thriller/mystery books and I have a fraught history filled with me usually feeling a lot of disappointment. Not the case here! I really liked this book y’all and maybe I’m more of a YA mystery fan than adult thriller reader.

This was a fast paced audiobook and kept me on my toes. I honestly wasn’t sure what was going to happen and who the culprit was going to be. I didn’t totally love when the reveal happened but it was sinister and I liked the build up.

I enjoyed all of the grayness surrounding obsession and deception. It won’t be my last book by Kara Thomas.

Gosh, go read this series y’all!! Two books in and I am obsessed. I love the mystery and history vibes. I love that they are fast paced and great audiobooks and I am SMITTEN with the romance. There is angst and tension and alllllll the things.

I love how well the story is crafted that leaves me guessing and plowing through pages so I can see who the culprit is while also being well balanced with Electra and her journey too. I love all of these characters and am anxious to get my hands on the next book.

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Mystery
- Language: low
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: moderate
- Content Warnings: weapons violence, murder, attempted murder and near death experiences
