A GREAT ROAD TRIP.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

I really enjoyed this sweet, growing up, road trip story. Full of car trouble, reconnecting with old friends and finding out what you want to do with your life. It was a quick audio read and highly recommend that format as well!

Being a dancer growing up I love coming across books that involve the profession. I loved seeing Chloe go for her dreams and learning a lot along the way. She was a beautiful main character who really made me feel for her desires and had me laughing when things went a little awry.

Add in a cute romance with childhood friend Eli and it was precious. I loved the banter and working through their previous troubles. Eli was soooo sweet and it was awesome that he got to work towards his passion as well. Both Chloe and Eli had to have some difficult conversations with their parents and it was nice to see the that both parents mostly came around and understood their choices.

I adored the side characters (Larissa and Trey) and getting to see the East Coast on Chloe’s travels. This is a short and wholesomely delightful read.

Overall audience notes:
- Young adult contemporary romance
- Language: some strong
- Romance: kisses/make-outs
- Violence: car wreck
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of a parent by car accident, underage smoking, main character hit by a car (resulted in broken ankle)

IT WAS FINE.

I don’t have a lot of feelings for this book which also makes a review kind of hard to write. Everything was just okay here, I think I’ll pick up the next one? I’ve heard better things about it at least.

The real gem of the story was the Hero, Jay. Wow did he put up with A LOT. Frankly, I don’t know why he did, but it worked out for him and that’s great. I thought it was incredibly sweet and kind. Took care of those around him and was a strong, reliable presence throughout.

I did not like Liya. One oddly glaring thing was her obsession with saying how expensive all of her clothes/accessories were? You can convey someone is doing well for themselves without making it come off in a way that really turned me off from her character. It was obnoxious and many aspects of her personality were bothersome.

The ending was mostly cute, didn’t love how some of the conflict went about, but like I said before, this was all fine. The second half was much better, and I’m not upset I finished it, even if it wasn’t everything I was looking for.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary romance
- Language: some strong
- Romance: closed door
- Trigger/Content Warnings: sexual assault, emotional abuse, domestic abuse, slut shaming

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an eARC.

MURDEROUS.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

That’s pretty much the whole vibe of this one. Dark, twisted, and oh so murderous. And while that’s not generally my jam, this grim YA fantasy was pretty good. I cringed a lot and the mental pictures painted are a bit horror movie style, and that’s its charm!

I really enjoyed the main character Ren. Struggling with her identity as biracial and not feeling like she fits in anywhere, she goes to Japan in hopes of finding a new home there. Upon arriving with her brother are when things start to turn, ahem, deadly. She’s very much morally grey and you’ll want to follow her down to the dark side.

The lore behind all of the terrifying monsters had me keeping the lights on. The writing was vivid, and I felt myself on the journey with Ren. I adored her brother Neven and the opposite views he created. He was the necessary dichotomy to a wicked story.

Plot wise, it did drag sometimes and it took me awhile to understand all of the different things Ren was trying to accomplish and why. But I loved her journey and her ability to express and acknowledge her emotions and standing in her feelings while she worked through what life had handed her.

The ending was wild. Did not see the majority of it coming and am so dang curious how the second book rectifies it all. There is a dash of something akin to a romance, but I don’t want to say more because it would definitely be spoiler-y. It was rich in explorations of family, identity and place to be who Ren wanted to be and I can’t wait to follow her journey further.

Overall audience notes:
- YA Fantasy
- Language: a little
- Romance: intense kisses/make-outs
- Trigger/Content Warnings: ableism, racism, many blood & gore depictions, mutilation of bodies (dismemberment, etc.), death of a parent, multiple murders, exile, bullying

OHHHHHMYGOSH.

This was so good. Even Sanderson's novellas are amazing.
And the audio was perfect

SWEET & STEAMY.

A charming read that kept me page turning. It was such a FUN read. I loved all of the flirting and banter. It was a great workplace romance that did feel a little competitive, but never over the top.

I adored Shay and loved her real life self. I laughed and connected with many scenes about trying to be an adult. She was still trying to figure out herself and where she wanted to be and I loved watching her work through those emotions. Add in Dominic (with his sexy forearms) and I became utterly smitten. I LOVED THEM TOGETHER. They just worked. I love when I feel so invested in a relationship. Shay being older was a touch that I thought was relevant and fitting. It added another layer to their relationship that definitely had some steam.

The surrounding plot was pure entertainment and it was so unique to have this set up at a public radio broadcasting company! I feel like I got the inside scoop on how these shows work. And convinced me I should look up more podcasts to listen to. I’m glad that things worked out there because I was all sorts of enraged reading about Shay having to deal with a crappy boss. The drama was amped up towards the end and maybe somethings weren’t completely worked out. It’s such a sweet happy ever after though.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: some strong
- Romance: kisses to open door scenes
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of a parent (past, but often brought up)

STUNNING FINALE.

It’s time.

It’s time you read this series.

It is beautiful, raw, strikes so many chords and is nothing short of a magnificent story.

I love these characters and how real everything feels to me because of how the writing conveys their tale. The highs and lows and everything in between drag out all of the emotions and made me sit there and hug this book afterwards. This isn’t a happy-go-lucky story. A lot of bad things do happen, but I love the infused sense of hope that something is better out on the horizon. That we’ll get there.

You’ll never find yourself bored or dragging through any of these points-of-view. The high stakes action bouncing off of angsty moments had me gripping pages to know where things were going. I feel like even the side characters got some great spotlight and I was hooked on them by the ending too. While yes, totally hate how some things went down (without a doubt had me in tears), it all still somehow worked out in the end. That’s what I love. The loss of who/this/that didn’t overshadow where everything was leading.

This entire series took me on a such a journey and I have a hard time putting into words what the closing of this final chapter meant. An Ember in the Ashes will definitely go down as one of my favorite young adult fantasy series. The amount of dedication and work that clearly went into this jaw-dropping. I’m a fan for life and can’t wait to see what Tahir writes next.

Overall audience notes:
- Young adult fantasy
- Language: little light
- Romance: kisses/make-outs; some little detailed fade out scenes (still felt appropriate for YA genre)
- Violence: depictions of war, gory and bloody murders and battle scenes
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of multiple loved ones

WONDERFUL DEBUT.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

I enjoyed this so dang much!

First off, the romance was so sweet. Like sugary syrup sweet. I couldn’t get enough of Clara and Sang together. There was passion and new experiences. Learning to lean on each other and the support Sang gave Clara was off the charts. Some swoony kissing scenes that really nailed this relationship for me.

I love the character growth in Clara over the year. She had to work through a lot of emotions and truths she had lead herself to believe for too long. Clara was pushed outside of her comfort zone and forced to face past relationships and trials too. By the end she had made some beautiful strides in owning her magic and herself.

There was a little bit of a repetitive nature to the story. Each season Clara would tackle a rogue weather pattern and then do that again and again. They did push Clara’s character forward, but it became extremely formulaic for me. And something that didn’t affect my rating, but that I did struggle with was how high my anxiety got reading this. Since climate change is front and center it caused my dooms-day anxiety to spike and made it tough to read at times (and this was a me thing, but wanted to mention to others who might be wary too).

I’m really excited to see what Griffin writes next. This was a witch book that I adored, and those are hard to come by for me.

Overall Audience Notes:
- YA Paranormal
- Language: a little
- Romance: kisses to closed door
- Violence: minor physical altercations
- Trigger/Content Warnings: grief and loss depiction, death of a parent and best friend, extreme weather patterns

A BIT CRINGEY.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

That’s the biggest thought I have. How ultimately, a lot of this romance had me cringing.

I liked the initial premise and set-up. A down on his luck QB, trying to make a new start and building a better future. He meets the coaches daughter and sparks fly. It was a bit insta-lovey, but not enough to make me want to stop right then. Half of the time I really did enjoy the chemistry between Logan and Jess.

Personally felt victimized by the forceful nature of emotions it was trying to make me feel. Filling it with many, many dark backgrounds for characters involved that just didn’t fit the rest of the vibes of the book. I don’t mind such things, they need to work together for the story, not opposing.

The ending was sweet and I liked how that played out (minus the over the top dramatic flair). Cute epilogue. Won’t be continuing this series.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: heated make-outs
- Trigger/Content Warnings: abusive and alcoholic father, substance abuse (Mom), loss of a loved one with terminal illness, attempted rape and sexual assault, nonconsensual drugging, loss of a parent by a car accident

KINDA STARSTRUCK.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

This book was neither here nor there. It’s a very positive three stars and I’m not upset I read it. There were just some pieces that missed the mark and caused me to lower my rating.

I liked Kate as the main character. She was witty and had a pretty funny inner monologue. What bothered me was how long some of her growth took until the very very end of the book. It was drawn out wayyy too much. Kate flounced around dating a bunch of different men (which was fine initially, but didn’t need to take up 75% of the book). So instead of feeling like this book was about her and Jess, it became an odd episode of a dating game.

I loved Jess. Really really did. Anytime he was on screen I was excited. Jess and Kate bantered well and had some tender moments that made me want to swoon. This was the best part of the book and I wish there was a whole bunch more. Jess and Kate were a great match and I loved how Kate’s son was apart of everything too.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: car accident
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of a spouse, cancer, car accident
adventurous slow-paced

 A GOOD START.

I did it! Started a new fantasy series and I am ready for more.

There is a LOT to unpack here, but I’m just going to hit the highlights. It’s the first book in a long [14 books] series. I wasn’t expecting to be wholly blown away since there clearly is a slower nature to it, but I was impressed enough to keep going. I like the world Jordan has built and appreciate that as the wheel turned I was understanding more and more about the magic system and world.

I loved meeting the heroes and getting a multi-POV set-up. I actually liked that they got separated for a bit because it helped strengthen smaller storylines and breakdown the backgrounds of other characters.

The amount of world building felt like a lot, but towards the end I think I got a handle on it. There’s a lot of traveling and seeing many cities and groups of people to really tell an adventurous tale. I’m excited to continue the series and see how things further expound. There’s an interesting prophecy at foot and some fantasy tropes I look forward to seeing!
