A JOURNEY.
Kova really likes to hit you with the punches in the end ya know? My heart is hurting after that ending. I knew something was coming and now I have to contend with waiting until next year for more answers for my love birds! THE AUDACITY.
I loved the journey Eira went on as a character. Heck bent on revenge at the beginning she learns over time to open up and rely on others. I liked her acknowledgement of her faults and the way she unfurled as a force to content with. I adored all of her friendships. I love a strong friend group and even the more salty characters are charming and perfectly placed.
The plot slowed in the middle with all of the Court of Shadows talk. It took up a lot of space and dragged for a bit. That was my only major complaint. I think a little more build up in the romance before things got heated would have been nice too. But that made more sense with the ending and subsequent plot lines so I’ll let that one slide.
I absolutely hate all of these villains. Yet I love that I hate them. The writing here is amazing at really building up that awfulness and dread every time The Pillars come into play. They’re terrific antagonists and I can’t wait for the ultimate takedown.
This series is full of action and heart. Romance and friendships. Twists and turns and the cliffhangers I have come to expect. I love this universe and can’t wait for the next book!!

NOT FOR ME.
BLOG || INSTAGRAM
For a quick audio book where I was hoping to have a cutesy regency romance play out.
This was not that case.
What I got instead was a mash-up of way too many points of view for a 250 page book. Every character was having their own storyline and while some of the moments were sweet, it just didn’t work. I felt like I didn’t know any of the characters on a deeper level before things were jumping to the next one and so forth. I think there were at least three different love stories woven in here.
I honestly don’t think I have anything else to say. I finished it in a day and don’t remember most of it now because it was easy to forget.

ALL THE STARS.
I can’t believe this book wasn’t on my radar until I read it for a book club.
HOLY COW IT WAS AMAAAAAAAZING. WHAT A DEBUT.
I LOVED the character growth that Xingyin exhibited. From the beginning until the end she grew in strength, resilience, listening to her soul to make the next right move. I couldn’t get enough. Xingyin is fantastic and the kind of fantasy heroine I want to always read about.
The ROMANCE. I ENJOYED A LOVE TRIANGLE?! Who am I? This is a testament to the author’s writing abilities because this was accomplished beautifully. The push and pull of young love, new love, and all kinds of love in between. Many quotable moments. Many swoony moments. And moments of pure shock and betrayal. Here for it always.
Everything flowed flawlessly. I didn’t want to stop reading because each chapter kept the right pace for the overall story. I loved the action (and subsequent recovery) scenes. And it even ends just right. No dramatic cliffhanger. Xingyin gets her answers and there’s the small sliver left open for more stories in this realm.
GIVE ME THE SEQUEL.

WHAT WAS THE POINT?
I will say first, I did enjoy this story by the end. I finally got on board with the characters the story and what was happening. That’s why I gave it four stars (and what I mention at the end of this review).
But I do have questions, because the ending made me concerned for what the whole point of this read was? I don’t know. I will remain hopeful that there’s more to this.
I adored Cade and loved that Karigan got a chance to find love and enjoy those moments together. She’s been rushed into growing up and I thought this was a great moment for her to slow down a bit, even amidst everything else happening.
It was interesting getting a look into the future and how things shook out after Karigan left through Blackveil. There’s a lot of terrible and scathing reviews for this book. And I honestly fully understand those comments. I think I lucked out by the audio book and not having to wait years and years for another installment. I’m choosing to hope the next book resets itself and this series and that this book seems to have a point by the end.
Overall audience notes:

- Romance: closed door
- Violence: a lot of blood/gore
- Trigger/Content Warnings: slavery, mass murder, physical and magical altercations, suicide (on page), kidnapping and torture, drugging without consent

WORKED FOR ME!
Love a great young adult contemporary with some romance. This is definitely one of those reads!
The romance was so sweet!! I loved the fake dating (of course) and how clearly smitten these two were from the beginning, even if Doe didn’t realize it yet. Occasionally she was too concerned about the reasons they were fake dating, but that played into her character growth by the end. I adored Wells and Doe. I thought they were authentically teens, making some poor decisions and learning how to apologize and accept help. Doe was a wonderfully strong main character and one of the best parts of this book.
Some serious themes were also handled (see trigger warnings). While it didn’t seem to fit the original plot of the story, it did work to bring these two schools together. I think it could have benefitted from a bit more flow, but I love a good teamwork moment and This May End Badly accomplished that.
I liked the prank wars and competing schools. I adored Doe’s entire group of friends and all of the coming of age growth and conversations throughout. A really superb young adult novel you should check out too!

- Romance: one fade to black + light innuendo

ANOTHER GOOD READ.
I am just highly enjoying this series!! Such a hidden gem that I can’t get enough of.
I read this book rather than listened and I think that made a difference in my rating. I thought it was a bit slower off the bat and that not as much happened in the overall plot. I was hoping for a bit more political intrigue and action, but that didn’t happen until the late second half.
What I did get a lot of was the roooomance! And I loved it! The spice was definitely stepped up a bit (which wasn’t my full cup of tea, but it’s cool). I love the progression and depth Elander and Casia with each other. They work together and build each other up and I love a supportive relationship like that. It’s always unique to see a fully formed couple before the series is even half over.
I can’t wait for the next read! I adore this entire cast and all of the close friendships. There’s some good movement here and I am thoroughly enjoying every moment.
Overall audience notes:
- NA Fantasy Romance
- Language: some strong
- Romance: three open door
- Violence: strong blood/gore
- Trigger/Content Warnings: physical and magical altercations, war themes and battles, near death experiences
NOT A BAD START.
Ah, this book felt like a YA fantasy hug. All of the tropes and themes I love. The enjoyable predictable nature of it all. This was a great opening to a new series and I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the books.
I listened to the audio and loved it if you’re looking for a new book to read!
Back to the story here, I adored Alizeh and Kamran. Alizeh is just trying to survive and keep hidden in the shadows not telling anyone where she comes from. Enter Kamran, a bold prince who is captivated by Alizeh. I did think the pacing for this romance was a bit quick for me, so we’ll see how the other books shake out (especially after that ending!!).
The writing was wonderful as always. Engaging and kept a steady pace. I don’t remember any major lulls or dull moments. Consistent development and world-building were another great feature and something I love in my fantasy reads. The mythology was interesting and I loved all of those editions as too.
I always love a lost queen, a duty-bound prince and a forbidden romance.

WELL, THIS WAS GOOD.
I can’t believe I waited so long to read this one because it was so goooooood. Oh my goodness. I LOVED the first half. The grump x sunshine trope with a dash of I hate everyone but you. GOLD. I didn’t realize just how much of a sucker I am for that kind of vibe in my romance reads.
Jack and Rose are in a marriage of convenience (lets just drop all of my favorite tropes into this one). Watching the push and pull of feelings had me in a puddle. I adored all of the small things Jack did to subtly show her he cared and how Rose remained positive about the new situations before her. The angst was real and the banter was top notch. And I swooned right along with Rose every time Jack rolled up his sleeves or gave a small smile. These are the things that I love.
What I didn’t love was how one of my favorite tropes was dragged out a bit. I’m here for a good, take care of someone when sick trope, buuuut this one went on for probably 100 pages or so and slowed down the pacing of the book a bunch. Without that I probably would have thrown 5 stars at it easy.
Yessss, there’s *drama*, but I didn’t care one bit. I was already so deep into this relationship and I think it actually fit the book well. Things get wild, and I was into it. ANYWAYS. Definitely recommend this one [spice was too concentrated/too much for met at the end, buuut for those who love that, read it!!]
Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: some strong
- Romance: 3 long open door scenes
- Trigger/Content Warnings: bribery, loss of a loved one, surgery, medical situations (exams, testing, appointments), extortion, panic attack

SURPRISED ME!
I am one of those readers who has never been super into shifter/paranormal romances. But I gave this a chance based off of a trusted friend’s remarks and y’all. I adored this!!!
Since I listened to an advanced audio copy let me first say, the audio was GREAT. I had no issues with the narration. Loved the way it was told, easy to keep on a high speed. It was wonderful and definitely recommend that avenue!
Back to the story now. Let me throw out some tropes that I LOVE that this book had: fake dating and fated mates. I will take those always and forever. I loooove fated mates and I think this was really well written! I think the addition of the second chance trope helped too. There’s a slow build, but clear attraction between Lincoln and Violet. I did struggle with how much heavy innuendo there was (but I know that’s a point for others, so I’m mentioning it!). There’s also DUAL-POV. Which I am an absolute sucker for.
I really liked the larger plot with the politics of shifter groups and supernatural organizations. The romance kept the necessary front seat, while an enjoyable back seat plot pushed the narrative forward. All around a wonderful read I’m glad I took a chance on and I can’t wait to see what next book will be in the series!

BEST OF THE SERIES.
Well I absolutely devoured this in a day. Without a doubt my favorite of this series.
I am usually not one to laugh at my books while reading, but this one had me laughing multiple times. The perfect amount of snark and banter between Tyler and Avery. I loved the right dose of sarcasm and the sweetness combined for chemistry from the get-go. I really loved them together and I liked all of the forced proximity (and cute puppy) aspects that helped Avery take down some of her walls.
The only small thing I could have added would be an extension to a few scenes. The book is under 300 pages and at times I felt one or two things could have been further expounded upon. But that’s a tiny complaint compared to how much I adored this.
I looooved the setting with the wedding business, the photography (that darkroom moment though!!!), and yes I’m going to mention again, A CUTE PUPPY. I love a great dual-POV sweet romcom and this delivered.
The conflict worked well into the build-up of the plot and I liked that it wasn’t overdrawn. I knew what was going to happen, but wasn’t frustrated because it made sense. I’m just happy everyone came to their senses and that a sweet epilogue was added to the end to boot. Another great read from this author!
