A really sweet novella!

It was a good quick story. A bit too much drama for me, but I also found a lot of it really sweet.

Uhm, this was fine.

But I realize I don’t love a fantasy standalone series (turns out each of these books is a different couple). It makes the romance pacing feel too fast, but the larger plot and world building feel to slow. It is not a match made in heaven.

The book gets off to an awful start. Completely thrown in without any clue to the world and I was lost for at least the first 10%. Once I got a hang of things and settled in, the story was much more enjoyable. I liked the story and the general concepts of the larger overarching plotlines. The elemental magic, a woman rising in power, a wheel that needs to keep on turning, all things I like.

I did find that the romance grew on me (even if, as I mentioned, too fast). It was kind of an instant attraction but not instant love. They definitely got to know one another and figure out what side of the line they stood on, and if that was going to be together. I really think a slower burn would have helped over the course of multiple books, but it is what it is.

I don’t have plans to continue this series.

VERY MUCH CONFLICTED.

I jumped back into this series on a whim and woooooo boy I am CONFLICTED.

The romantic plot lines of this series will be the end of me. I’m at this point of having invested too much time not to see this through, but also I’m going to be enraged if things don’t follow through for Karigan. She is getting the short end of the stick EVERY DANG TIME. In, seriously, everything. Her moments of peace are few and far between and I feel for her in having to pick herself back up over and over again. I would want to stay down for a bit too.

The action and politicking stayed steady. I liked the flow of action and where The Second Empire drama continued on. There were some characters missing, but the ending led me to believe it’s going to come full circle in the next book? Which makes sense and I will be picking up ASAP.

I am also incredibly conflicted about King Zachary. While a good King, he is a bit wishy washy for me as a man. He wants to make every decision correctly but after deciding does not commit fully and the wake being left behind is hurting my heart. I did love that we got his POV much more in this installment and his understanding and choices at least were easier to understand. I love the multi-POV and the writing style. It is perfect as an audiobook.

I adored this story. Favorite of the series for me. I would first say that this isn’t classic enemies to lovers, it’s more of a soft workplace rivals to lovers. Fortunately for me, that didn’t sway my overall thoughts, but it’s worth noting since that trope is broad in definition.

I LOVE when the guy falls first and Cameron is obviously smitten from nearly the beginning. I thought he was precious and even with all of his walls, made an effort to be in Darcy’s life. I loved Darcy as the FMC. I liked her spunk and drive. And finally going after what kind of career she wanted really resonated with me and all the flower talk made me wish I had my own greenhouse. Both of these lovebirds together were the sweetest. I couldn’t get enough of the relationship development and how the slow burn of rivals to friends to lovers came about.

The third act conflict was [hallelujah] relevant and not drawn out. Even more so, both parties handled it like actual adults without blown out drama. Cameron truly did have some things he needed to work on and I love that Darcy took the time to put him in his place, AND listen to him. They both worked for their relationship with compassion and I felt all the warm fuzzies reading this book y’all.

I mostly felt like this book was trying to hard. There’s a lot of different angles for the story and the mythology + Shakespeare vibes were a lot to undertake in a short read. I think the focus one way or another would have been more effective.

The romance between Hunter and Luna was sweet. It was a gentle take on first love and choosing that love. They had an undeniable connection that clearly played out by the end of the book.

The mystery aspects were what kept me reading most. Every time a certain POV chapter popped up I was curious how the story was going to continue. There’s a nice and slow unveiling of facts and backgrounds that lead to the reason Hunter and his family are in hiding. I thought that there would be too many points-of-view (there’s 5+ if I remember correctly) but it did enhance the story and give necessary background information to understanding everything that was happening.

Magical realism isn’t my favorite. I know there’s always a book out there to make me think otherwise, this wasn’t it unfortunately. I do think the audio was narrated really well and would recommend that avenue for trying this book out.

GRUMP X SUNSHINE LOVE.

Another win for Keisel and contemporary romance.

I was definitely into this grump x sunshine + enemies to lovers read. The banter between Tessa and Luke was exactly where it needed to be and I liked the slow burn of their relationship overall. Tessa had the most work to grow on me because she intentionally came off as an unlovable main character. I thought there was decent enough growth and acknowledgement of her wrong doing to sustain the changes she was making to her life. I had a hard time thinking she’s go through with everything her boss was telling her to do? but it’s fiction, it’s fine.

I adored Luke. He was a great love interest and I always love watching walls slowly start to crumble between two souls finally finding each other. I enjoyed the humor and butting heads, and the sweet moments (like fishing at 3 AM).

Wanderlust was strong in this one and it’s a perfect read for summertime on a beach somewhere.

A good novella. Didn't feel the connection to the characters and story as much as the first.
