Reread March 2023 Y'ALL SHOULD SEE HOW MANY TIMES I TABBED MY BOOK.
IT FINALLY HAPPENED.

I have been on this eternal quest to find a vampire book worthy of my own five star rating. AND IT’S HERE. 2022 IS THE YEAR. This book deserves all the love and I beg of you to give it a chance too!!
I enjoyed Broadbent’s first series, but this already feels leaps better in the writing and world building, characters, everything. Her storytelling is even more impressive and that’s what had me fall in love with this book.
Oraya was such a force. I loooove morally gray characters and this woman is swimming in the color. She was someone I easily wanted to root for and loved the start of her character arc. Watching her loyalty to one side, and the slow unraveling of everything she knew is only going to make book two that much better.
The romance with Raihn? AHH. Slow burn perfection. The movement from rivals to reluctant allies to friends to lovers was fantastic. There were so many good moments between these two. I could not get enough of them. I liked the way they communicated and opened up and slowly learned to lean on another another through the fearsome trials they were going through.
AND THAT ENDING. Well timed reveals and betrayals abound and I am HERE FOR IT. Throw in one of my all time favorite tropes that I can’t wait to see play out and I am an official fan girl for this series.
Overall audience notes:
- NA Fantasy Romance
- Language: strong
- Romance: two open door; med-high explicit
- Violence: high
- Trigger/Content Warnings: battle scenes, loss of life, creature attacks, physical and magical altercations, loss of loved ones

WAS I MISSING SOMETHING?
BLOG || INSTAGRAM
I spent the entire book thinking I was missing some critical aspects of information? I know this is set in the same world as The Bone Houses (which I have read) so I’m not sure if that’s where the background info was but without what I thought I needed this book was lackluster.
And I tend to love heist books?! I do find them hard to accomplish in one book only 400 pages though. Especially when you add in multiple points of view. Many characters + many backgrounds + many different decision makers makes for not enough time spent on each character to get a true feel and depth for them.
Some of the plot pieces were kind of cool. I liked the idea and think others might enjoy this book much more than I did. There’s some good friendship rekindling and a tiny dash of romance.
Nothing surprising or overly enchanting for me. I never got frustrated with it (which is why three stars over two), it just needed a lot more for me to love it.

- Romance: kisses
- Violence: mild

I wish I had loved this a little more but there was a lot of goodness within this story too. Let’s get into it.
Romance wise. I thought Avery should have been upset much longer than a few hours when she saw Josh again? It went from I can’t believe he left me, to are we about to kiss? waaaaay too fast. It made me take a lot longer to catch up with them and appreciate other aspects of their story. I did enjoy many of the quiet moments. The necessary and deep conversations and seeing some of that spark reignite. Spice wise (this did not affect my rating but I wanted to note) was much higher than I anticipated in the explicit column. If you love that though, this is one to note for a 3-4 level spicy read! I found it mostly easy to skip over.
I adored Avery’s friend Brooke. She was the right kind of charming and fun edition. I loved how supportive she was and was truly a great person to be around. Brooke was the only super prominent side character (which was fine) so I love how well rounded she was and apart of the momentum for the story.
There seemed to be a lack of dialogue too. I found the pacing slowed an incredible amount with big paragraphs of day to day and Avery’s inner monologue. I would occasionally skim over sections that weren’t highlighting anything new to get to more prominent pieces.
I loved the multiple mental health discussions surrounding many of the characters. The importance of acknowledging how you’re doing, if you need help and how others can be of assistance to you. Many of these conversations made me feel seen in my own battles. There is a major trigger warning for a descriptive rape scene that Avery went through (in the past, but the full scene is recounted). I appreciated the author’s note in the beginning about this and the dialogue about how women handle these abhorrent situations. I especially loved how Josh helped Avery through many of these moments when memory reared it’s head.
An enjoyable read overall even if I had some issues here and there with pacing and general set-up. I LOVE this cover and look forward to checking out the next story in this series!
Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: some strong
- Romance: multiple open door – high explicit; mild innuendo
- Trigger/Content Warnings: rough parent relationships, a recounted rape and sexual assault scene, depictions of anxiety and panic attacks, grief, loss of a mother from cancer (mentioned often)

I don’t know if I would have kept reading this if it wasn’t for speeding up the audiobook.
For a STEM heroine there wasn’t even much STEM conversation? I guess I was expecting a lot more since that seems to be the theme of this series and it wasn’t here. Much more about knitting and coffee. Which was alright, but nothing exciting.
There was practically no chemistry between these two. Penny decides she wants a friends with benefits relationship (other thing I don’t love) and instead of watching them realize their feelings for each other it was mostly them arguing. Caleb never wanted to talk about anything important and Penny wanted to make him talk about things. I never got behind the thought that they would actually make it past the end of the book (even though the epilogue says otherwise).
Meh. I don’t even feel like writing this review because of how unmemorable this book was. Moving on.
Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: some strong
- Romance: multiple open door
- Trigger/Content Warnings: cheating (not between the main couple), rough parent relationships

MY HEART. MY HEART. MY HEART.

I only pick up historical fiction books when I’m in the right *mood* for them. And hallelujah that I was in the mood for this book because IT WAS AN AMAZING STUNNING WORK OF ART.
Ohhhh how this tore at every aspect of my heart and soul. I loved the initial chapters of seeing these characters in their youth to growing up and fighting a war versus the worst kind of evil. The strength of these women has no limit and I was in tears plenty reading these encounters that happened for too many.
The push and pull and absolutely full of angsty romance was here too. Skye and Nicholas OWN ME. And when I say that ending made me sob? IT REALLY DID. It was worth it. Lester constructs an intense story with the push and pull of a life at war. I also loved Margaux. She was a clear unsung hero in this book. I liked that she started off on the fringes and then showed her true and honest side that had me all in my feels too.
There’s a lot of emotions at play as the raw reality of WW2 is described. I appreciated learning even more about this time period and the attention given to research. Looking up more information about Catherine Dior was amazing. I love that all of the fashion aspects were wrapped into this too. It was interesting to learn how Dior began creating his outfits and the role his sister played in that too.

- Romance: fade to black
- Violence: high
- Trigger/Content Warnings: multiple aspects of WW2 concentration camps, loss of loved ones

I am LOVING THIS SERIES Y’ALL. Who knew we were in my romantic suspense era? I love the way Cowles formulates these small town romantic stories and I am here for it alllllll.
I adored protective alpha Beckett. Give me all the who did this to you moments. But also the you can do this moments too. I LOVE that Beckett strove to protect Addie, and also gave her the tools and confidence she needed to move forward in her life and to work through her past. The chemistry and connection between them was instant (but not in an insta-love way). I loved the progression from friendship to more.
The suspense kept me on edge!!! It’s kind of obvious where the drama angle would come from, but how it all worked out left me flipping pages so fast. I love this dash of mystery and intrigue. The characters coming together to take down evil and love always finding its way back to each other.
This series is amazing and I can’t wait for the next book!

I just didn’t love this one at all. I went in with hope and came out wondering if I’d give this author another go.
Most of the story just involved drama. Drama over here, drama over there. Not actually building the plot or developing the characters just DRAMA. It was kind of like a formulaic hallmark movie, but not the kind you enjoy reading.
Things got off to a fine start. I liked the friends to lovers idea and the kiss scenes were great too.
I wanted to love this and wish it had worked out better for me. I don’t want to sit here and bash though so I’ll leave this as strike in the miss column and move on to the next.

LOVE THESE TWO.

I think this is my new favorite Martha Keyes book. I looooved Valentine and Rebecca.
Rebecca was the sweet naive woman who cracked me up multiple times at her learning the ways of society. I loved it. This wasn’t an annoying thing to watch unfold. I genuinely loved Rebecca and would want to be friends with someone so filled with light and hope. The juxtaposition between her and Valentine was perfect.
Valentine, my reformed rake, OH HOW I ADORE YOU. He was swoony and kind and I could not get enough of watching Rebecca slowly wrap her way around his heart. There were even some beautiful moments towards the end that about got me misty eyed. The sinner and saint vibes (without being preachy) was one of the best things about this book.
Some aspects towards the end seemed to extend the book a little longer than I was looking for, but that’s mostly the only issue I had with it. This has been a fantastic series so far and Rebecca and Valentine definitely hold a place in my heart now.

DISAPPOINTED.
Yeah, probably my biggest let down of 2022 in regards to contemporary romances I was excited for.
Why the super heavy agenda dumping? I could write an entire list of everything that was shoved in my face over and over again. It’s cool to have opinions and to incorporate those, but I don’t want to feel like it’s overtaking the fact that I picked up a romance to read. Not the news.
When Levi and Bee were talking and hanging out in those very few rare moments, I LOVED IT. Give me more of that please. I liked them as a couple when I actually got to see the development of their relationship. There was a substantial focus on the physicality of their relationship over everything else and those scenes were plain awkward.
Bee’s friend Rocio was fun. I did like her Wednesday Addams vibes. She added the right kind of touch to the story over everything else that was happening.
The MISCOMMUNICATION. It made me think about putting it down during the first half. Some is fine, it happens. But flagrant use of eh, I’ll tell him later, when you have a chance to clear the air annoy me beyond belief.
And the end???? Did I miss what genre I was reading and we jumped into romantic suspense? That was wildly left field and clearly out of place. I had to flip the last page back and forth a few times because of the abrupt ending too.
Clearly I have (and can continue) a lot of thoughts of this one. TLH is still my golden child favorite and I’ll continue to reread that one. LOTB on the other hand convinced me to no longer pre-order Hazelwood’s books.

I love just coming across an enjoyable read. Maybe not shout out at the rooftops worthy, but one I would easily recommend should you need a regency romance in your life (answer: you do).
This romance was super swoony and sweet. I liked how Margaret and Gregory came together. There was heated banter, some absolutely perfect regency scenes and a ball. Who doesn’t love a ball?! I thought this had a great build up and definitely had some enemies to lovers vibes.
Margaret took some time to catch on to the prospect of falling in love, but Gregory was there to woo her. I liked that the surrounding plot fit the romantic story well and the dash of a love triangle didn’t bug me.
