Spirit-haunting storyline that evolves into a travel / exorcism quest. Borrows heavily from elements of Japanese folklore but not Own Voices.
Some interesting elements but unfortunately didn't give me the atmospheric spooks that I was expecting. There's a tad too much over-explanation for the rules of the lore.
I like that the driving character dynamics involves young cousins who are loyal to each other + a sort of reformed avenging ghost.

Strong warnings for explicit depiction of war crimes, sexual violence (including children), torture, ethnic & religious genocide.
Started off shaky but the compelling plot delving into the Bosnian genocide gains momentum in the middle & leads to a strong ending. Has my big pet peeve: POV hopping within a single scene.
I wish there is less focus on the foibles of the MCs' personal and romantic lives. But I would be interested in reading more from this series.
