The prose is beautiful but not overdone. The author has a pleasantly simple and straightforward yet elegant way of writing. I truly enjoyed my time with this story.  It is rich and melancholic. I listened to it on audio and the narrators did a wonderful job. I don’t prefer to read on audio because I miss a lot but this one was still impressive enough that I gave it 4.5 stars. I definitely recommend this for folks looking for a coming of age story with lgbtqia rep that’s not gratuitously spicy.

Tiffany McDaniel is an amazing author and her adult books are my favorite! This middle grade fantasy is just not my genre and I am not the target audience for it. If you like fantasy then you will like this sweet book with great messaging.

This is the saddest bleakest most depressing book I have ever read. The author is a good writer but the story is just unbearably brutal. I actually wouldn’t recommend this book.

I found this to be intriguing and liked every story in the compilation. I loved the diversity of the authors. It’s always so interesting to see into the lives of others and learn about their struggles - some of which the reader might share. I liked this one more than What my Mother and I Don’t Talk About however I did that one on audio which might have not been the best medium for me. I would recommend this to folks that appreciate memoirs.

This is a bit of a departure from what I normally read. I appreciated that it included issues of racism which can’t be talked about enough. It’s a found family, cozy sweet novel that I think most people would enjoy. I liked the structure of the book - how each chapter alternated from present to past. That was done well and it wasn’t confusing. I was certainly interested in the characters and eager to discover how it all played out. My knocks against it are that I found it a little repetitive at times and somewhat simple. Overall I would categorize this as a sweet easy read.  (There are some sad moments sprinkled in).
