Wow. It's difficult to put into words this stunning debut novel from Emma Stonex.

Atmospheric, mysterious and haunting, The Lamplighters is the story of three lighthouse workers who simply vanished without a trace in the 70s. We're treated to a dual timeline. The first tells us the events as they happened. The second, 20 years on, is the voice of the women those men left behind as they speak to an author who wants to try and solve the mystery whilst writing a book.

I found this quite slow to start and it took me a good 30% of the book to get my head around the different characters and who was married to who. But once I overcame that, it sucked be in. The narrator's in this book were brilliant too - I typically listen at 1.75 - 2, but I felt like I was doing a disservice to them at that speed as I wanted to really enjoy every minute of this book.

It's not your typical historical fiction. It's a story full of secrets that culminates in an ending that nobody could have predicted. In fact, I was so absorbed in the narration and I was enjoying every step of the way, that I didn't find myself trying to solve the mystery.

It's quite heart-wrenching by the end as you realise you're so much more invested in the characters than you could have imagined. I loved The Lamplighters. Original and a stunning debut.

Christian Grey - you're not for me.

I have no words beyond, "quite possibly the worst work of so-called literature I have ever endured". Oh no wait. They got progressively worse in "darker" and "freed".

If you're happy to overlook the fact that every sex scene is virtually identical and that Christian Grey is in fact one very unhinged man then this ones for you. However for me, just thinking about this book makes me angry. I just think it's unrealistic and ridiculous. Particularly all those women that are falling under his spell. He's a dominant, needy, arrogant, manipulative and most of all controlling man. So what he's hot? So what he's a multi-billionaire? Give me average any day.

You can't deny what it's done to encourage people to read however - that is admirable.

I've always been one for reading the book before watching the film but with this, I did it the other way around.

Not the worst read ever but I don't feel like my life has been changed from reading the book. The film moved me to tears and really seemed to affect me. We can all relate to some element of this story. Maybe not the situation but certainly the emotion attached to it.

Maybe I just didn't get it? I'm not the hugest fan of books that are solely letters. I think this was reflected by how long it's taken me to read a very short book in comparison to many others.

I guess I was disappointed by this book because I expected to feel differently having read it - but maybe I was just a filter ;)
