The first book was definitely a stronger story. This got a little too into the idea of twists that weren’t very shocking, and the trusting nature of Inez borders on her being a complete idiot when it comes to people’s motives. It can get tiring to read from her perspective and I enjoyed Whit’s parts much more. But outside of telenovela levels of family drama, it was an enjoyable young adult novel, and it had an ending that was satisfying enough for the ship which is what most people probably care about.

This was much more enjoyable over all than the Red Queen. Elizabeth’s story was top-notch as was Nicholas’. I wasn’t as much of a fan of Girl in Amber as it felt repetitive at that point and added little development for Alice’s character, but I did appreciate that Alice was as sick of the repetition as the reader feels. Overall, three of the four shorts were five stars, and I’d put Girl in Amber at three stars, so I’m averaging the book out to a 4.
