I remember watching the movie adaptation of this book quite a while ago and really enjoy it. I picked up this book with the memory of the movie in mind. (I also picked it up because I was in the mood for something historical fiction-y.)
I really enjoyed Lily’s strong voice. She had my attention right from the start of the book, however, after a while, I got somewhat bored. I think a big part of the reason I got bored was because I remembered a lot more from the movie then I thought I would. The writing was beautiful, and Lily’s voice was captivating, but I wasn’t surprised by anything in the plot.
I had a few personal problems with Lily’s perception of color and race. It’s sometimes hard for me to take the historical aspect in when reading books set in this time period. I tried really hard with this one, but it’s importing for me to be honest. And, if I’m honest, there were parts in this book where I was slightly uncomfortable because of the things Lily would say.
I was completely mesmerised when August told stories of any kind. I was very aware of how many pages I had read throughout every part of the books except for when August was telling a story.
I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. A big part of it is because I didn’t realize how much of the plot I remembered from the movie. Everything that was supposed to be surprising didn’t surprise me at all. My favorite part about this book was August. Without her, this book would have fallen flat.

Wow.
I didn't really know what I was getting into when I read this book. I thought I was going to read a book that would disturb me a little bit and leave me with that cool weird feeling you get from reading something a little off kilter. But this is a book that really made me think. I loved it. I LOVED IT. It was so good! Wow. Just. Wow.

Oh wow. This book is one of those books that once you finish it you just want to hug it and kiss it only hoping that your affection would get though to the characters. This book is a treasure. I loved it. LOVED IT. It was everything I needed and even more. Wonderful.

3.5/5 stars.
This book was unlike any children's book I have ever read before. The writing style is very whimsical and fairytale-like, which I really enjoyed. For some reason, I really had to take my time understanding this one. Some books are meant to be read out loud and this is one of them.
The side characters in this book were phenomenal. Every concept was wonderful. I kind of want to give this book to someone who analyses children's books because I feel like this book has academic meaning. I can't even explain how wonderful these side characters are. I wish there was a book just about them. They were the most interesting part of the book.
I'm going to read the next book in the series because I own it but I'm not quite sure if I"m going to continue with the series after that. We'll just have to wait and see :)

Reading books over the summer for class isn't very fun. Even though this book had it's interesting parts, I probably would have been more into it if I read it during the school year.
This book was kind of a disappointment. I give it a 2.5. I thought that it was going to be one of those "This cannot be real." moment's but it was just meh... well meh in a good way, but still meh..

Booktube-a-thon 2015 | Book # 2
Traded this one out for another book when I realized that I wasn't interested in the other. It was a really quick read. I haven't read Stephenie Meyer in forever. This wasn't that impressive. Oh well. It helped me get one book further in the booktubeathon

Full Review from my blog Owl Eyes Reviews
This book was on my ‘ I need to read as soon as possible’ list for a really long time. With the booktube-a-thon, I was able to choose a book I’ve really wanted to read and I automatically chose this book. I’ve been haunted by curiosity and intrigue for years and I couldn’t wait to start it.
Honestly, (wah wah wah) I was kind of disappointed. In my opinion, this book is really overhyped and is marketed differently than it actually presents. The writing style and point of view were different than I expected. For some reason, I though that the book was going to be in the POV’s of each of the girls before each of the committed suicide, but it wasn’t that at all. The main POV felt very detached which in turn make me feel detached from the whole story.
I really loved reading about the girls. They captivated me. Id it wouldn’t have been for the small little peeks I got into the girls’ lives, I probably wouldn’t have finished this book.

I really liked the art but the stories were pointless. Sad. I was really looking forward to this one.

One of my favorite "guilty pleasure" movies is The Blue Lagoon. I don't know what it is about that movie but I absolutely love it. This book reminded me of The Blue Lagoon. I couldn't get enough.
I am a fan of everything taboo and this book hit the mark with it. Was this the best writing I've ever encountered? No. Were the characters the best? No. Was it entertaining? Hell yeah! I haven't squealed over a book like I did with this one in a while :) Good read.
