Full review: So, We Read This Book

This wasn’t a bad book. It was genuinely enjoyable, just nothing I hadn’t seen before. The story was decent, the artwork was good (I especially loved the colors). The flow between panels wasn’t as great as I’d liked it to have been. And the characters, while interesting, were a little… flat. They’ve got potential, but their arcs didn’t really take them anywhere, so there’s currently stuck as stereotypical supporting characters.

Would I recommend this? Maybe. To people who I know without a doubt would enjoy it.

I think I liked the show a smidge better, but this was super enjoyable all the same. The wry, slightly Snicket-y humor is so good.

Two things:
1) this book was a FUN time
2) I really fucking liked the romance in this ??????

I picked this up on a whim, and I'm so glad I did. The protag is a strong, cool woman, and I was immediately there for it - girls that kick monster butt, especially in dark horror settings, are my FAVE.

It's very dark and sometimes pretty gore-y, so steer clear if those things aren't for you.

I was not a fan of the writing, and the story, while intriguing was incredibly trope-y. No part of me wanted to continue reading this.

I'd only recommend this to someone who wanted a watered down version of The Count of Monte Christo, stripped away of all the long-con plotting, and, the very personal revenge. This just didn't work for me

3.5 stars

I love the way Henry writes horror - not focused on supernatural spooky things, but the grim realities of the world we live in. That said, I am very disappointed in how this book wrapped things up. Especially if this thing is a stand-alone.

TW for this book: murder, suicide, substance abuse

“But that is how a tragedy like ours or King Lear breaks your heart—by making you believe that the ending might still be happy, until the very last minute.”

I'm calling it now - this is likely going to be my favorite book I read in 2020. I am overwhelmed by this book - by its simple, yet wonderfully elegant narration, by its characters, and, by its mystery.

If We Were Villains was deliciously dark, well-woven, and incredibly unputdownable. It will pierce your heart and tear right through you; and you will thank it gladly. That ending will ruin you, but you'll love it anyway.

I wish for anything that I could read this for the first time again, because I know - I know I'll be thinking about this book for a long long time. If Romeo & Juliet had been even half as emotionally arresting as this book was, I might have liked it a little more.
