francesmthompson's Reviews (976)

There is no denying the power that is packed into this book, but personally I felt more moved by the Author's Note at the end. That was what brought me to tears.

This is a classic example of how the cover would have usually had me running away from this book and yet I thoroughly loved it. Not that there's anything wrong with the young man on the cover - lovely looking chap - I've just been wrongly led to believe such covers make for stories that lack substance, structure, suspense and significance, and all of these things and much more were in this book. (I actually think the author published the book with more than one cover for those who wanted something more discreet but I'm now inclined to just tell myself to get over my own silly hang ups that no doubt have their roots in internalised misogyny!).

A kind note, be sure to read about trigger warnings before reading as it gets heavy in many places.

Really enjoyed so many parts of this book - brilliantly written, likeable characters, great banter - and I loved the setting (women in STEM) and representation but phew, there were maybe one or two will-they-won't-they moments for me... But if you love a sloooooow burn, you'll lap this up.

Always a little odd to write a review of your own book, but I have read this book more than any other this year AND I figure this review is a great way to introduce readers to The Weaker Sex and to give them an idea of what they can expect from this fast-paced, relentless and unforgiving deep dive into the perils of patriarchy, the false promises of feminism, and the soul-shattering horror of violence against women, all wrapped up in a suspense-thriller about a team of London-based professional killers.

Gosh, that all sounds rather dark doesn't it? Well, this book is not all darkness. It is also about humanity, about hope, about connection, about desire, and about love. Just be sure to hold onto your hat - and your heart - as you read it.

COMING JANUARY 2022.

Yikes.

I expected a spicy dark romance and got a fully fledged, multi-layered serial killer cat and mouse thriller with a ton of suspense and a little spice and a frankly not at all dark romance story on the side. And I'm not mad about it. Please do check for content warnings.

I've now read everything Sierra Simone has published and while this isn't my favourite series of hers (It's me, not her - hist-fic is just not my fave) I have so enjoyed this world and reading her earlier - still ever so deliciously kinky - work. Thank you, Ms Simone!

I feel the same way about this novel as I do the author's first. It was easy to read, and I enjoyed doing so, but I didn't fall in love with the book in any real way. I felt distanced from the characters, I felt unsure of motives and meanings, I wanted more depth to the story, the issues, the people and their relationships.

Quick and easy thriller with few big surprises and most of the revealing action taking place in last 30% but kept me interested and turning those pages.
