My first read of 2017, was a book that I randomly picked up from a display in the library. This book wasn't bad but I felt like it was lacking details and clear transitions between events. It seemed to jump from one day or event to the next, without wrapping up the previous day's events. There were some minor details that didn't make sense but the story was good.
Dark Matter was a Book of the Mother selection that I didn't choose. At the end of 2016, it was nominated for the Book of the Year by BOTM members so I knew I had made a mistake. Dark Matter is a complicated story with a great deal of physics intertwined. I'm not sure if the science actually checks out but that was somewhat difficult to understand. Beyond the science is a story of love, happiness, and the importance of social interactions and peraonal relationships versus fame and prestige. Dark Matter was a good read.
I selected this book from a library display on strong female characters. Great read, strong female characters for sure, and a nice hidden moral.
Good reads gave away copies of this audiobook at the beginning of the year. I'm sure this is a great read but it was an amazing listen. Trevor Noah has a unique voice, literally and figuratively. I enjoyed every minute of his story.
I selected this book from a library display of works by African authors. The writing was great, the characters were well developed, but I definitely missed to point. Maybe it will come to me in a few days.
Overall, this was a great story. Swing Time started off slowly and the storyline was a bit hard to follow but the story was pleasant and well written.
I don't think I've ever felt a broader range of emotions than I did reading this book. The Glass Castle left me feeling frustrated, grateful, hateful, and at ease. My students will be reading this in class and I'm excited to share this with them.
I am a huge fan of Issa! I liked the stories she shared but think the book would have been better if it was organized as a short story collection. The transition between the chapters was choppy and somewhat confusing but like I said, I love Issa!
